JJ ABRAMS Enterprise

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

Oh I get it, the underside marking is on the front of the secondary hull.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

Also I guess the fact that the nacelle struts are UPRIGHT rather than swept back, is another TOS reference.

They look weird tho because they're attached so far back, and the rear of the secondary hull is so thin back there... the "scooped out" area under the tail is so big on this one.

I wonder what the shuttle bay looks like... :unsure

Or if there even is one.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I love that Battle Beyond the Stars ship - whe I was a kid I remember telling my uncle how much I wanted one and he said "You won't when you get older and have a girlfriend" - I had no idea what he meant

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

Terrible, schoolboy mistakes regards beauty, simple design ethics, flow, and so on and so on and so on.
Really wrong. :unsure

Most of those who say they love it start by saying they're not
big Star Trek fans :lol

Well I am a fan, and I hate it. I just hope this movie doesn't suck :unsure

Well, then, I'm huge life-long Star Trek fan, and I love it. The secondary hull could be shifted farther back for my tastes, but that's a minor complaint. Can't wait to see her on the big screen. :thumbsup

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

Well, there ya go. Like all things, the wisdom lies in the middle somewhere. You don't want somebody who just loves Star Trek no matter what, and you don't want a JJ Abrams, who has no real love for it. You want a guy who loves it, but isn't co-dependent with it. It's not fulfilling something personal and precious he can't stand to exist without, and he's not emotionally detached from the work. I could argue that if you love Star Trek, you wouldn't do this film in the first place, but if you did, you'd seek out its simple, essential core, and keep that together. And like it or not, that is not what this film is about, obviously. Not from the production design, nor the released scene descriptions, or any of the leaked plot. It's Star Trek in name, mostly. Maybe it'll be a really great movie. JJ Abrams could really use one of those inasmuch as they keep handing him franchises like he's ever done one. Which he hasn't. Though I might submit that this Enterprise - almost-cool-but-not-quite - is about as apt a description for Abrams movies as anything. So chances are, it's exactly what you think it is. For me, that probably means straight to DVD. Assuming it's free.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

The design does not really work for me- but I'll wait for the film to make a final call... The scene descriptions looked fun.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I actually began a project to test that exact theory, by taking a CG model of the original Enterprise, and seeing if, through pure surface painting cues, etc., one can overcome the scale issues of the original design. My finding, quickly, was that the original design would absolutely work, but it needs an extra level of manufacturing detail to sell. The shapes aren't the problem, the surface is. But as you say, that's solvable. And even with a "tweak" here and there - I dunno, angled back nacelle pylons? - would still absolutely read as the Gen 1 Enterprise.

To me, this represents the biggest disappointment...

Don't lose sight of the fact that there are at least a couple different emotional dynamics or perspectives at play here.

One: Your opinion of the new ship
Two: Your desire to see the old ship

These can be separate dynamics.

Or in other words, I don't really give a **** WHAT the new ship looks like. What really pisses me off is that we will now NEVER see the original beauty grace the big screen.

All we have left now is Trials And Tribbilations... :unsure

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I'm glad we aren't going to see the original 60's enterprise. It always looked like a cheap toy. Thank god they didn't go with that. I'm a Star Trek fan and I LIKE the new Enterprise.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I'm another of the casual Trek fans so the new ship doesn't bother me in the least. Actually, I'd kinda like to see it made even more different myself. The TOS design was cool in context of TOS. The TMP design was cool in context of TMP.

I don't see a need to slap the old design into a new movie that is essentially a non-canon, non-continuity, alternate universe film. Trek needs a bottom up reboot in my opinion and it doesn't hurt to give the designs a kick in the pants to boot.

Personallly I always liked seeing the sleeker designs like the Enterprise E or the more modern Akira class ships (as seen in DS9).

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

Silly.

Proportions are all off, and not in a good way. Gives the impression that this is going to be a comedy. Everything seems arbitrary... remove graceful concave dishing from bottom of saucer making it a monolithic slab, but add ridiculous concave curves to nacelle supports making them look like they're made of rubber, move supports all the way to back of secondary hull, and move secondary hull further forward under dish and make it bulbous, and then remove mass from secondary hull, and add it to the front of the nacelles. Who's piloting this thing? Marvin the Martian?

None of these proportional changes make sense. Bulbous nacelles, goofy swooping curves on things that were straight butting up against straight lines on things that were originally curves. ... just... arbitrary for the sake of being arbitrary (ie "Hey, lets move the registry number from the saucer to the bottom of the ship! See what we did? We're so creative!")

Then they puss out on their "radical" redesign by tacking on movie era details here and there. Notice how the movie stuff is only really on the dish? Looks like it was designed by a committee. No grace. No balance. Stumpy & Clumsy like the Next Gen "D".

Took 15 minutes to restore a little dignity to the old girl...

I'm not quite that guy, but I like trek quite a bit. I've never been able to wrap my head around the shape of the federation starships though, and as far as I'm concerned this is more or less in line with all the other enterprises. It's an unwieldy looking monster of a dragster that someone put in a silk gown. Look at it - The nacelles have always looked like they were designed by someone who really wanted big pipes on their chevy. It's a flying saucer dragster for ******'s sake!

In any case, to me Trek has always been best when it's about the characters and the situations they explore. The ship is just how they get there.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I can't say that I hate it. In fact, I like the look. We must remember that this is NOT a prequel, it's Trek re-imagined with a young TOS cast!
Except for the old Spock, who has been put into this re-imagined world.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

Well actually according to a comment left by Robert Orci on Trekmovie.com yesterday, the official explanation is not reboot or reimagining, but rather First Contact introduced the borg into the 21st century, which led to the Enterprise series, which led to this movie.
