Jedi Wrist Communicators — Clone Wars style

Needed a Jedi wrist communicator, circa The Clone Wars for an Ahsoka build for my daughter, so built a 3D model.

Here is I ended up with:

  1. Thin version in black.
  2. Thicker version (since this is for a 6 y.o.), in white (polished). Would not do polished again, since polishing seems to have filled in some details somehow (my theory is that some of the dust of what was polished off was heat enough by friction to bond again in small crevices).
  3. Thicker version in black.

For paint, I'm using DecoArt Americana matt acrylic white and black, plus DecoArt Americana glow-in-the-dark for the "light" and DecoArt Americana gloss silver enamel for the button (decided this should be silver since the buttons on the Jedi communicators used in the PT movies were silver). I might redo the "light ring" in a gray, but went with white so the glow-in-the-dark paint has a better chance of working.

They've been cleans up quite a bit since these photos. Have started applying glow-in-the-dark paint.

Polished version of left, thick in the middle, thin on the right.

All three.Have painted in the white grills since, as my daughter thought it was not to spec from the original (she's 6 and already geeking out on details).

Neat idea.

Just an idea for a future version: do the white circle in clear and back it with an electro-luminescent panel or a led. A led can run off a watch battery, the EL panel will probably need more power than a single watch battery. I think the EL panel would have best even light distribution without being to bright, and look better.

Considered a light, but for now, keeping it simple.

Updated the models after rewatching The Clone Wars and doing some new screen grabs for reference.

Now have a 1 piece model and a three piece model. With the three piece model the idea is that you do the "button" and "ring light" in different colors and materials (you could go nuts with high detail black acrylic for the body, frosted ultra detail for the ring and real metal for the button if you really wanted).

The big problem with electronics is space. Due to the way 3d printing works, you generally need walls to be at least 1mm and parts that fit together need a .5mm space for play, that does not leave a lot to work with since the main body is only 3mm tall. But perhaps will try in the future.

Sorry for necroposting, but I'm building a Clone Wars Obi-Wan and I was wondering if you'd be kind enough to share your file for this. I'd love to be able to print one for myself!
