Jan 2024 UPDATE Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - Pewter Medallion

Re: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Pewter Medallion

Here's the best I can do for these screencaps. Not HD I'm afraid, but a little sharper than youtube!

Re: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Pewter Medallion

Aww man this is awesome, RHPOT is one of my favorite films, maybe it's because I'm from Nottingham and I have grown up with Robin Hood. I really love the medallion you made it's a great replica.

As regards a run all I have to say is "what I want to know brother, is will you stay with us and finish what you started?"

Re: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Pewter Medallion

When I first saw this film, I hated it. But, over time this film eventually became a favorite of mine. I have purchased a number of the actual shields from the production, as well as Marto's version of the Robin Hood Locksley sword. Though not 100% accurate, it is still a beautiful piece! Do let me know if you ever have an extra necklace or wanted poster for sale! It would look great in my medieval library! Great job on both!

Ha, nicely done! And thanks for the comments fellas.

I am actually retooling the master for this piece at the moment, making it a little crisper and cleaner. I hope to have a new mould done soon, and will update this thread when its ready.

Re: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - Pewter Medallion - Re-tooling the master on page 2

So, I've wanted to come back to this project for a while now, but haven't been able to spend the time on it. I was initially very happy with it, but looking at it more and more, there are some issues with it that were bugging me. The symmetry was a little off, and it could have been "sharper"

So I've taken a couple of resin casts from my original mould, cut them up and glued them back into place, focusing much more on the symmetry. I then spent some time filing the cast, sharpening the edges, and cleaning it up.

I'd come this far, so I thought I'd also address the stone in the centre, and the "gold" wires around the circle. First off I sanded off the original "stone" from the cast, but made sure to leave a border around the circumference to act as a "setting" for the new separate stone which would be added later. I then added the wires, hoping to make them part of the pewter cast, instead of having to add them later. The theory behind this is to make the reverse of the medallion a little cleaner.

Anyway, enough rambling, here's a shot of the re-worked resin cast, before primer. Obviously, at this stage, it looks like a massive step backwards, but I promise, this is progress!!

OK, here's a shot of the new master, now in a coat of primer. It still needs a little refinement, but it's close to being ready for the new mould.

In this shot you can better see the new "setting" I've carved from the resin, ready to accept the new centre stone.

I've ordered some of these stones to use in the centre. They are made from Sodalite, and should be the perfect size. Fingers crossed!

Re: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - Pewter Medallion - Re-tooling the master on page 2

Sorry about the triple post, but these stones were delivered today. They are, thankfully, a perfect fit for the new master medallion. This is a VAST improvement on the original centre stone. Even down to the lighter blue "veins" in the darker blue base colour. Now, time for a new mould!

Great update! I love the previous cross I got from you but I always thought that center stone could be improved. Well done!

Re: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - Pewter Medallion - Re-tooling the master on page 2

Thanks Indy! Originally I couldn't find an appropriate stone, but, like I say, it just started to bug me that it wasn't quite right.

I lucked out finding these stones, and was very relieved to see them fit yesterday. I've ordered some more high temp rubber today, so should have a new mould ready in the next couple of days.

Re: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - Pewter Medallion - Re-tooling the master on page 2

The rubber finally arrived, so I have been able to make a new mould, and take this first cast in Pewter. This is after cleaning up the flashing around the edges, and a little bit of polish, the stone is just sitting in place at the moment. There is a small "scar" on the right side of the crucifix as you look at it. This was an eyelash or something, sitting in the mould when I cast the pewter, so it won't be there on subsequent castings. I may use this cast as a version of the medallion that was damaged in the fire.

I've got to say I'm pretty excited about this project again. It's been worth the effort to re-tool and re-mould I think.

Finished photos to follow shortly...

Re: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - Pewter Medallion - Re-tooling the master on page 2

Really love what you've done and how you have done it. Though I can't help but think the molded wiring doesn't look right. The stone seems perfect!

Re: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - Pewter Medallion - Re-tooling the master on page 2

Thanks, iDD.

The wires are a different approch for sure. The problem with how I was doing them originally, was that it left the two ends of the wire exposed on the reverse. Which was fine, but it just bugged me a little.

What I'm trying to do with moulding them into the cast, it to keep a nice clean surface on the reverse. Once the gold leaf is in place, an there is a wash of ink filling the "ribs" of the wire, I'm hoping they will "pop" a little more.

I should have a few photos up of the first finished prototype from this new mould later today.

Thanks again for looking.

Re: Stripped down and re-built. Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - Pewter Medallion

Nearly there. I'll have another go at the finishing on the next cast. The size I used to fix the gold leaf was pretty old, and didn't hold up very well to the weathering process. Not perfect yet. YET! ;)

Another cast, and a slightly different weathering technique...

it's getting better and better. Great re-worked prop.
Have u used gold leaf on it?

Thanks very much. Yep, gold leaf on the detail pieces, then a wash over the whole piece to tie the elements together.
