James Bond Canceled / MGM in Financial Mess

Hello everyone,

Just found out the next James Bond Movie has been permanently canceled and MGM is in a huge financial mess..read the story here:

Next James Bond Film Permanently Canceled - Cinematical

Well, it's not permanently dead. C'mon this is Hollywood! There will be a reboot, remake, reimagining. And they can't leave Bond with out doing it in 3D! :rolleyes:wacko

I'm sure the mess with MGM will be cleaned up soon, and the series will go on. Like the article says:
The one silver lining in this cloud is that the Bond franchise will live on regardless. Bond is a proven commodity, with Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace each having made just under $600 million dollars at the box office. Whether the franchise continues at MGM or not would seem to be irrelevant. If it's offered for sale, someone will jump on the opportunity to buy it.

.....:cry

And with Quantum we literally set up Bond as his own now. He's gotten over everything, he's back on the force, he knows who the bad guys are, and now we're pulling the plug? I don't want a reboot, re-imagining or that crap. I want the story of Daniel Craig's Bond to continue. I want to see where it goes. I was so committed to the story and characters in both movies and I loved how one followed the other seamlessly.

This is so stupid.

A reboot with bond being a girl called Jamie bond. A cute redhead with Scottish ancestor y and she is a bisexual thus making her hot for both girl and guy villains

My sentiments too. Casino Royale injected a breath of fresh air into the ailing franchise (especially after the horrible Die Another Day) and the last thing I want is another reimagining a few years down the road. For all you know they might just go with Robert Pattinson as the new Bond, heaven forbid.:cry

Arrrggghhhh! With Daniel Craig, I'm a Bond fan again for the first time since the 80s, and now they're pulling the plug? Bah!

Just because one studio has problems does not mean the end of James Bond. The Bond series has been with a few different studios since it started in 1962. MGM does not even own the rights, its owned by the producers who will probably shop it around now and find an even better deal somewhere else.

Yeah, there is NO WAY this franchise will die. But on the other hand, it's possible that Daniel Craig won't be involved. That's a shame, because Casino Royale was so good, and Quantum was SO bad. Weak way to end the franchise (for now).

Sony Pictures owns MGM right? I think, they'll switch over to Sony with the people and do it under a new name, which would be a easy evasive maneuver.

Yeah, MGM has been sucking wind for a while now it seems from what I've read. It seems it's time for them to make some hard decisions and let go of some properties or something. I wish somebody else would simply take over the Hobbit before it gets sucked into the MGM financial tarpit of death.

Not the point - the danger is that this makes it less likely there'll be a third Craig picture, with any studio. People move on, contracts expire, etc.

Casino was a godsend. It actually made me get up and go see a Bond picture at the cinema for the first time in forever. It was both a good Bond movie and a good movie, and when was the last time that happened?

Quantum did stink so it's a real downer that this incarnation of Bond gets not only a very brief run, but doesn't even get to go out on a high note.

Argh, even more worried about The Hobbit now. Something that has "guaranteed blockbuster" written all over it, but may still crash and burn before even going into pre-prod. Unbelievable.

I'd hardly call The Hobbit a "guaranteed blockbuster." More like "guaranteed moneymaker with the right ad campaign."

But yes, it's a damn shame that Craig's Bond won't get another outing to atone for Quantum of Solace. Plus I was interested to see how that storyline would wrap up. The contractual issue is, I think, the biggest concern. The same kind of thing happened to Timothy Dalton, really. I think his first film is a cracking good film, but the second one was only so-so. I've come to appreciate what it has to offer since then, but it's still only so-so. And then.....it took forever to get another film out and by that point, Dalton moved on. So he had one film where he was good, another that people hate, and now, a guy who could've been a GREAT Bond becomes a weak one.

I never implied the Bond series was DEAD. Just for NOW , MGM has canceled making another Bond film which is sad because I really liked what direction the franchise was headed....more believable stories and less unbelievable silly gadgetry like the invisible car?? I'm also disappointed Craig will be gone once someones finally decides to make another movie.
As for the Hobbit?......time will tell.

But remember the Superman and Spiderman drama. If MGM holds on to the rights it could be 10-15-20 years until another movie gets made.

And if another studio gets the rights there can be lawsuits and all kinds of garbage that keeps the movie from being made. Wasn't Spiderman tied up for almost 20 years with lawsuits, different studios, everyone wanting to put their team on the project ?

This would typically be the time for Kevin McClory to try to exert his Thunderball remake rights again, but he's dead, and I would venture a guess his heirs aren't as determined to make that happen (again) as he was, if not even outright sick of that crusade.
