Jack Sparrow to the rescue.

Well I have been working on an Iron Man Mk VI suit for the past few months and was aiming to wear it for our Office Christmas party. I have realised there is no way its gonna be finished in time so I needed to rethink. Then I saw something on the news about Johnny Depp being in the UK filming for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie and thought Jack Sparrow is a pretty dam cool character so hopefully he's going to be my rescuer. I had the first film on my PVR and watched it again last night for some inspiration and that pretty much decided it for me. I then went onto the web and started researching. Mainly ebay and a couple of UK sites but it seems most of the stuff is easier to get in the states :/.

SO things I think I am gonna need are. Starting from the head down.

1. Hat - Seen some very nice looking proper leather ones on ebay but nearly £200 is a bit above budget for an one off function. Also saw the Disney licensed hat on ebay too for not too much so I reckon that will be the direction I am going.

2. Wig - Seems to be masses around from some professional looking ones for a few hundred to really cheap and nasty ones. I think I am gonna have a go at making my own wig using a couple of Brown Jamaican Rasta wigs I saw on ebay.

3. Bandanna - Found a guy selling em for less than a tenner that look pretty good though a bit too red, need to make it a bit orangey. Ordered this already though so I'll need to weather it when it arrives.

4. Dangly bits - There seems to be some really cruddy looking ones that are cheap and some good ones that are a bit expensive. I am gonna have a go at making as much as I can for these.

5. Face - Wife wont let me have a beard ! so lookign for a good enough fake one :)

6. Shirt - Came across a listing on ebay for a Jack Sparrow shirt from a seller called pauliepoos looked cool so I grabbed one. I reckoned its gonna be next to my skin so I dont want some itchy cheap crap!

7. Vest - Not sure what to do here looks like the vest in the new movie is made from my nans cushions so I'll probably go for the older look. Not sure what to get though there's a seller called costumebase that I did order the pants from last night but I wasnt sure about the vest.

8. Coat - Good ones are expensive, cheap ones look crap. I reckon I'll be too hot with it on anyway so I am gonna just skip it.

9. Baldric/Sheath/Sword - Found a plastic sword on ebay which will hopefully work out OK. I think I am gonna have to purchase the rest but cant make my mind up where from.

10. Belt(s) - Seems Jack has 2 belts in the second and third films. I think I am gonna stick with one to keep the cost down. I am pretty sure I already have a leather belt that will work just need a buckle.

11. Sash - Long white with red stripes, keeping my eye out for a rustic pair or curtains or tablecloth for this unless theres a better (cheap) route.

12. Pistol - Quiet a few plastic flintlocks on ebay, ill grab the best looking one and hit it with some paint.

13. Pants - A ordered the ones from costumebase on ebay, though they looked good enough.

14. Boots - As luck would have it I have some Squared toed suede boots that are almost perfect. Just need to work out how to make it look like they come up to below my knee and add that huge flappy cuff thing. I was thinking maybe getting some suede trousers and chopping the legs off would do the trick.

15. Arms and hands - (Ok so I missed them out between my waist and boots! sue me) Saw a green gemmed skull ring on ebay so ordered that (its from china and will prob take ages to come :/) I think I can pull off making the ripped glove thing and wrist wrap myself.

So any advice on this will be greatly welcomed. I'll update this thread with stuff as I get along.

It occurs to me now that I have put all this down on page as it were that this may be more bloody complicated than Iron Man is!

You'll probably regret those costumebase pants. They're terrible. Also, modding boots is way more difficult than you'd expect. I'm currently stumped on how to finish mine, and pretty much my whole costume is hinged on whether I can figure those things out in time. Have a look at my thread:

It might give you some ideas and point you in the right direction for a lot of stuff. I started out planning to do it cheap, but that's not how it turned out. My advice though, if you have the money, Yordreem is probably the best one stop shop for everything except the boots.

If you find yourself in a pinch, you can ditch the hat and coat. Plenty of scenes where he doesn't wear them. Doesn't kill his "iconic" look at all, either.

^^Agreed. I hardly where the frock coat, not unless Im going to be outside for a long time. I also hardly wear the tricorn. If Im going to a con I will, but for parties I leave it off

Thanks read through your thread and theres a lot of useful info there. Checked out yordreem and his stuff looks very nice. If only had that kind of cash. I think I am gonna hold my course and fabricate what I can where I can. In fact I started already. Well I made a frame and a polystyrene head to my proportions so I can start on my wig!!!

Here is the quick run down of mine...

and the L-O-N-G drawn out research that goes with it.

If you're going to do one waist belt, I suggest you go with a first movie look and not 2 and 3, the baldric is easier as well and the wig is not as complicated. Only one ring, only the compass hanging from the belts and it's just as recognizable. (seen here: http://jacksparrowcostuming.wikispaces.com/COTBP+Variances)

(oh and I love my Costume Base pants)

Cool stuff. I have tried to join KTTC but my requested hasn't been accepted yet (name of Woody). That wiki is awesome.

Ordered a couple of these wigs Party Fancy Dress Brown Jamaican Hawaiian Dreadlock Wig on eBay (end time 06-Oct-10 20:36:54 BST) I reckon I should be able to butcher them together into something that resembles CotBP Jack.

I also ordered the Disney hat. I know its not leather but it looks good enough for a Christmas party given that it may well end up loosing its way once I have imbibed one or two festive beverages. Also ordered a set which has the compass and tattoo in it. Its actually a Dead Man's Chest set but I imagine the compass is the same.

I like other rings jack wears in the later films and some of the other bits too. I don't suppose it will matter too much if my CotBP style bleeds a bit into the DMC look I could be Jack between the films as it were :)

I noticed the Kuchi strand seems to vary a lot between different vendors and peoples costumes that I have seen. I think I'll make it myself though see how well I can reproduce it with modelling plastic and paint (I paint Warhammer 40K figures too). Anybody know how long it should be or know any of dimensions of the beads so I can get a real scale reference picture drawn up?

well first of all, only use refs of Jack when making the kuchi, no vendor sells an accurate bead strand - for the money - Tyranical (on "the bay") is as close as you can get.

Measurements? Does this work?

Kuchi: http://mojoturbocostumes.wikispaces.com/file/view/ruler_kuchi.jpg

PO8: http://mojoturbocostumes.wikispaces.com/file/view/ruler_po8.jpg

Trade Strand: http://mojoturbocostumes.wikispaces.com/file/view/Ruler_tradestrand.jpg

If you ordered the compass with the tattoo.. it's the cheaper set and by cheaper I mean the compass is "cheaper." Th dial on the inside doesn't spin and it has a fat bottom, it will do in a pinch and no layman will know the difference.

When I got my rings I got them off "the bay" and amazon. (they were $1.99 on amazon)

* oh and PM me your email and I can try to get you approved at KTTC

Sounds familiar, about the middle of August I seen some OST teasers and thought I want to be Jack Sparrow This Halloween so started to assemble, modify, paint, collect and research everything "Jack". So far I have:
Pants - handmade from pattern and modified slightly to look more from the period.

Shirt - Also handmade from pattern. Its good and will suffice for this year but going to purchase a pauliepoos when the fund level comes back up.

Waistcoat - handmade and not quite finished. Wish I had the OST paisley material but made it to resemble the OST waistcoat.

Frock Coat - handmade and another not yet finished but 80% complete, still stitching the button holes and have to add buttons.

Costumebase belts and baldric - needed to save some pieces of eight and got a good deal from them. Another item I would like to upgrade when I have the funds.

Charms, Sail needle and dangles from Tyranical - Great pieces thanks Tyranical!

Compass - got the cheap non spinning one. Modified the height of it, it looked too tall to me. Painted and weathered to look more screen accurate. I like it, will do just fine.

Flintlock - Cheap plastic one, painted and weathered. Looks a lot better then it did new.

Sword - Plastic Pirates of the Caribbean sword, holes filled and repainted. Looks nice.

Boots - Got the leather Pleaser boots, scuffed them up a bit and artificially weathered them. Not the boots I would like but will have to do for now.

Beard extensions from ms.mazie - great extensions, love the look of them and can't wait to wear them.

And the wig - This my first attempt at making a wig and I have to say it is passable, but not really what I would like since I began this project. I used the rasta wig and a straight wig, looks ok but after seeing all the great wigs out there I wanted to give it another go and make my own dreads but not till I finished the waistcoat and frock and with Halloween getting closer and closer the better wig is not a reality for this year.

oh yeah I still need a sash, not sure what i'm going to do about this yet and have not seen that curtian at IKEA so still not sure on this.

So it sure sounds like we have been bitten by the same bug and once you start there is no turning back. Good luck with your "Jack" build and look forward to seeing your progress.

Ok So here's my mostly DIY Kuchi Strand. I bought the Kuchi coin dangler (painted the gem red as it was blue) and the tube as part of a belly dancing kit. The rest is all made out of poly-morph plastic and painted.

Gonna try make the dangly end a bit more screen accurate if I get chance but I am pretty happy with the rest of it.

My pauliepoos shirt came and its cool!

Still working on the wig (making dreads is rather time consuming and the muscles in my right arm are aching like crazy) hopefully have that finished this weekend.

Well I did complete my costume in time. hopefully get some more pics soon. Our Christmas party was a blast and being Jack proved to be enormous fun.

Given we are working on Lego: Pirates of the Caribbean I made a mod to the Kuchi strand to Legoify it a bit :)

And in case anybody asks yeah there was Rum in that glass along with lime and passion-fruit. It was a themed cocktail called Pirate Punch. We had a bunch of other theme drinks too based of the other lego games we made such as Monkey Brains (Lego Indy) and Polyjuice Potion (Lego Harry Potter). the polyjuice was particularly fun as it was topped off with a bit of dry-ice so it smoked for a few minutes !!
