Jack Sparrow Compass Toy Conversion

I was thinking of sculpting one from hard foam, and then casting that. It would be one that doesn't open up though, like a beauty prop of sorts..

as you can see, i got a hinge, but its a link too few, and a half inch too long >< Help me find the back ring...

I was going to do a similar thing with the MegaBloks compass, except buy a cheap orienteering compass and put it inside.
Not virtually accurate, but I think it'd be wayyyyyyyy cool

try:
http://www.ohiotravelbag.com/pdf/p2004-b1.pdf

page 31 of 39 on the PDF and Page 50 actually in the book. Go to the bottom middle of this page, there is a continuous hinge link option from 10"-50" long. you just have to cut it down.. The knuckle is very close(3/16" vs. 1/4") and its Pin OD is slightly smaller then the real prop. When I find something closer, Ill let you know..

oh, and here is some terminology for hinges for reference.

and also,,,,, Continued SUCCESS on your project..

Simply awesome Kylash. Your hard work and attention to detail is paying off. :thumbsup

Now I gotta make one. ;)

Seeing how well the dress up compass is turning out, is it safe to assume that this compass makes a better base to mod than the MegaBlocks compass?

Now I'm thinking to buy this set, but I'm still working on my scratchbuilt replica... I will wait until it's finished, and if (probably) it will be a piece of crap, I'll buy the toy (and I will copy this step-by-step "tutorial" :D )

Got parts and pieces to begin mine.

Found the perfect leathertte for inside the lid. -- perfect blue color and perfect texture. Michaels had a nearly identical clasp as what MR used (two for $.99). And I got a hinge from Home Depot.

Only thing I failed to get was the ring... But I'll find one somewhere...
