Where did you get the leatherette material?

And how did you remake the inner gold dial?

Not sure if this is for me or not, but with respect for Kylash (and the fact that this is his thread), I think I need to hold back on discussing my own project here.

Pm me if need be...

fyi, I was able to cut down a piano hinge I found at a hardware store for this, and it had the proper number (6) sections. It fit perfectly for the toy.

a piano hinge, at a hardware store? Are they labeled as such? Ill have to find one.

Yeah, thats what the blister pack called it...i believe i found it at my local lowes.
It was perfect...I knew I needed a 1.5 inch, six section hinge, so I took my ruler, and it was perfect.
Hope you dont mind me posting a pic of mine here, but this is the hinge:

If someone sends me the front clasp and a backhinge, I'll end you a piece of leatherette material.

Building one for my daughter -- I appreciate all the tips shared on this thread. Enjoying the progress pics and finished piece pics.

Gotta figure out how to re-do the triangular compas mechanism that rests abve the moving pattern -- I guess from sheet plastic...anybody else care to share how they re-did their's?

I'll be machining mine out of brass, when i get to that stage. I have some brass "L" shaped rods to use as the three "prongs," and will probably end up cutting the actual triangle out of a brass sheet.

Does anybody knows if there is an on-line store that sells the toy set overseas?
(Or if there is someone kind enough to help me? PM me so we don't hijack this thread ;) )

P.S.
Sorry Kylash for all these posts.

That is from 5Q x 6" x 4' walnut(darker vs. lighter), cut to spec. Milled. Best of luck & I agree that everyone has great looking stuff. Keep it up. :thumbsup

Kylash, what tool did you use to cut the corners out of the clasp?

Anyone found a suitable replacement for the lanyard ring?

I'm thinking of doing one of these in wood using various veneers...
I am thinking the trim is inlay...can anyone confirm if they're raised or flush with the body?

The original inlays were flush with the wood sections.

I just started "accurizing" my compass today, thanks to this thread. Im cutting down the bottom section to be more in proportion :)

Also, my hinge was long enough for one more compass hinge, if anyone wants to trade I'm still in need of leatherette and the back loop-thing.
Just PM me and let me know.

Nick you and I are doing the same hing at the same time.

I just cut down the bottom part to about 22mm tall. I did some MAJOR re-working of the bottom plate. Tried to retain the spining gears, but due to the difficulty and that you'd have the button sticking out, I basicaly just gutted the entire bottom plate except the post that the dial spins in...

I have plenty of the leatherette I picked up. Enough for about 6 compasses. Shoot me your address.

I too still need the ring for the lanyard.

FOUND A RING :).. digital is dead but on charge, found a decent ring to use, a little big for the toy but would be about the right size for the full size prop, the plan is to cut the ring down, re-bend it to shape and cut some of the base off and re-drill the holes for the ring, it comes in a package of 2 one antique brass one bright brass for $1.48. pictures to follow of the rings as well as the modifications for our toys.
