Jack Sparrow Compass Toy Conversion

Nice work, Robo.

I broke down and bought the MR compass. When I get it, I'll take comparison pics to the toy I modified and post here in case anybody is interested.

Definitely post some pics good doctor. ;) I'm thinking of ultimately getting one myself and would love to see some good detail pics before I shell out the cash.

Late last night I decided to re-work the sundial part. What I did was fine but one always discovers a better way to do something after it's already done. :rolleyes

I wish I could find a good graphic of the dial card from the first movie. I kinda like that version better than the one in the DMC.

Guys, I just got back from Michael's where they had these little wooden project boxes...

The diameter is just shy of 10cm. Total height is 5cm. (Top half 2cm, bottom half 3cm)

Inside wall is .25" thick.

I don't have any tools to cut out the top for the dome or anything, but the box was only $0.50. (Marked down from $1.00)

I can take more measurements if you guys need, but thought this might be a neat starting point for those of you who want to do it all from scratch.

They'd be nice for a custom, but isn't Jack's octagonal??
Considering the amount of work you'd need to turn them into octagonals, you probably be better off doing it from scratch.

Just my 2CW :)

but while I'm writing, here's mine.......(complete with my patented "tuna-can ring" ;-)
Nowhere NEAR being finished, but I thought I'd put it on anyway

Crap.

False alarm.

Arrrrrrrrrrrgh.

DON'T USE A LICENSED REPLICA AS A REFERENCE..

I completed the sundial on the inside of the compass, using Master Replicas as a reference.

Well... Seems MR either intentionally or unintentionally got the vane wrong.

The original prop has the vane extrending all the way to the outside edge of the dial face ring, where as the MR replica vane does not make it even half-way across the ring.

See the pics in this thread...

What started as a modification of the toy compass turned into a scratch built compass. After purchasing the toy set, the small size of the compass kept bugging me so I decided to build it from scratch in the correct size.

The basic compass is built out of wood (Poplar, I believe). I then finished it using ebony oil stain which really shows off the wood grain. The inlays are styrene strips. The compass rose is a scan of the toy version. The dome is a plastic christmas ornament. The sundial is built from scrap styrene. I then weathered the compass using various shades of brown acrylic paint.

Overall, I am pretty happy with it.

Hails, that looks FANTASTIC.

How long did it take you to build?

Would you build another and offer it for sale? How much would you charge?

I discovered after converting the toy, that to do another I would charge close to what MR is asking for theirs, so in the end someone would be better off buying the MR one.

Again, nice work.

Thanks. It took me about 3 days to build. The easiest part was building the wooden box. The hardest was the inlays. I don't think I have the patience to build another. If had to do over again, I would have built the sundial out of real brass. Next time.

OK, I'm officially jealous. That's one of the best I've seen so far (though they are all great.)....

The leatherette looks very similar towhat I used (of which I still have LOTS).

Here's mine -- finito today.

Thanks everyone. The leatherette is imitation which came from a cheap case for glasses. I used paint from a vinyl car seat repair kit to color it.

Great Job PHArchivist. Looking at yours, I just realized I forgot to "chip" my inlay on the lid.

Thanks, man...

Don't use mine as a reference -- its backwards.

PHarchivist --

FANTASTIC JOB. Perhaps the best of the toy conversions shown to date. NICE job on the sundial and VERY NICE job replicating the back lanyard ring -- I wish I had had the patience and determination to make my conversion look this nice.

I am sure you'll agree you wouldn't sell the one you made for less than $200, considering all the time you put into it.

Thanks for sharing the pics...I had a feeling yours was going to look incredible.

I still have extra leatherette material and the brass half-dome tacks (fo under the sun dial) for anyone wanting some -- just send me a an oversize padded or bubble-wrap envelope SASE with 3 first class stamps, and I'll send you enough to comlete one toy conversion...while supplies last.
