Jack Sparrow Compass Toy Conversion

Just got my compass today.... PHArchivist... you have a source for the leatherette anymore?? ;)

This looks fun. I might go the easy way for the brass parts (l brackets overtop, washer and make the fin part out of plastic). I'm also considering trying out the magnet thing to make the compass move. :D

Sidenote... I also got the sword/baldric set... The sword is perfect for a project hilt, along with the baldric buckle... More to come on that. ;)

Ah progress...

I'm in about three hours now. Got the compass brass peices painted, and awaiting the numbers on the washer. Also rigged the dial to move like the movie. Or sorta anyways. You be the judge...

I'm thinking of just painting on the panels and then taking an exacto knife and scoring the edges around the paint to give it the inlay look. Hmm,....

More sanding painting, getting the clasp and ring. FUN FUN FUN.. :D

A little bump to ask if someone have a nice clasp to send me (in Italy it looks hard to find).
If someone have something feel free to PM me, thanks.

Anyone?
Or at least give me a suggestion (a eBay link, maybe?)

I'd imagine postage wouldn't be anymore than a normal letter or card. How much does it cost to send a letter from California to Italy?

Apparently (but I'm not sure if I've used the right features on their site) the cost is $1.70 USD via USPS using airmail letter post and a standard envelope... But a confirmation from someone who use "more often than me" USPS will be really appreciated (just to be clear, I've NEVER used USPS and I've never ship anything international yet, so... :D )

Here's a few progress shots...

Still needs some work (dial details, hinge completion, lanyard and ring, etc.) but all in due time. Not really taking this too seriously, just having a little fun with it.

I have to say thank you guys so much for this thread. It is going to be so incredibly helpful. :D

I got given the set as a birhtday present this year, and was most excited about the compass. I made an Elizabeth Swann Pirate outfit for the Premiere of DMC (Though now I have better reference material I'm remaking most of it, except the Jacket - that I got pretty spot on :D) so now I'll have the compass to go with. I might not be starting th eproject for a bit, as I have other things on my list, but I will certainly be trying this in the coming months. I'll post my progress as I go.

Ok, so I have cut mine down, added the ivory pieces, and the brass hinge.

The one thing I am stumped on is the brass washer, what is the size?

Oh, another thing, how are you guys painting this? I saw a thread that added a wood grain effect to the pistol prop, is anyone doing that for this box?

Thanks,

Bryan

ps, pics maybe next weekend.

Yes, you can get them at Michael's Crafts.

They come on these small wooden craft boxes....

Michael's deosn't sell the clasps individually but in a bag of 3 (or so) but if you just want one, buy the craft box. They're only $1.99 each.

I'm just starting my own conversion. Many of the older photos are no longer loading in this thread; is there any chance some of you could re-post photos of your finished compasses?

Ramiel: If you still need a clasp for your compass, I have an extra. PM me to make arrangements.

Well...if anyone has a spare compass to trade/sell. I can't find the pirate costume box here anymore.

Regards
TAZ

I have some of the deep blue leatherette material that goes inside inner domed lid -- I'll send you what you need to do a conversion for $5 postage-paid.
