Fabric, fabric. Well, you're in luck, because you can see through most normal fabrics pretty well, especially if they're black. I'd go to the fabric store, drape some over your head and test how well you can see through different fabrics! Might be useful to have someone with you to tell you if they can see you through it too, as when using too-transparent fabrics camera flash often goes right through and reveals whatever is behind them. You should be fine with a medium weight drapey fabric (the drape helps keep it close to your face, the closer it is to your eyes the better the vision), just see what works for you and stay away from chiffons unless you're layering them up a lot.

I'm doing what will hopefully be the final Space Pope assembly this afternoon so I'll have photos of the finished suit up as soon as I can get my housemate to snap a few shots

Right! The Space Pope is all finished. I added sleeves to the robe, hemmed the neck, stuffed and sewed the bottom hem, glued the tongue in the mouth and red cabochons on the sleeve decorations, pinned and hand sewed on the pleated belt, hand sewed lining into the sleeve ends, made and attached calf covers to the feet (more hand sewing) and made sure that I can struggle into both hands once the rest is on.
Now all that's left is to wait for my housemate to get home so I can finally snap a photo of it on as selfies will be nigh impossible once the Pope is fully assembled, as it were.

So the ol' Pope and I just won the WA regional Championships of Cosplay and I am rather chuffed, as one would expect.
Actually scratch that, I'm totally amazed - the costumes there were so freakin' cool that I can't quite wrap my head around it, but I had a blast and everyone was awesome.
So damned proud. And stunned. Mainly stunned.

I saw the news pop up on my Facebook feed earlier on the Oz Comic-Con page, and immediately recognized it and got excited. Congrats, man!
