Ironman foam first ever build!! COMPLETED!!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

My LEDs arrived today!!! So naturally, building got put on hold.
I built my arc reactor!
Lights on (befor I added the radial stripes or "coils", my coils are just electrical tape.)

An with the lights off.

I know it's not screen acurate to any particular arc reactor. But I like it. I used alot of tips from stealths arc tut. But made a lot of changes, obviously. I'm happy with it.

And I also did a test fit of my light up eyes.

Still need to mess with them a bit. But I need the face plate painted before I can really mount anything to it. So now I'm really in a crunch to get that sealant!! Haha

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

Lookin good mate. Some great ideas in this build!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

So Stealth, you say the DCM Duplicolor is too dark for a MkVI? I have 8 cans of that stuff ready to go on my MkVI foam build. Is the Banner Red that you mentioned a solid color or a metallic? Maybe we need to have a Sticky for color preferences for each suit version. :)

Helagak, what method did you employ for the eyes? Stealth's? I keep going back and forth between Stealth's "container" plastic method and XRobot's "white mesh" method.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

I'm using a method very similar to xrobots mesh.

I used dark cherry metallic. I have a fiberglass helmet and foam suit. It came out lighter on the helmet. I think I used white primer on the helmet and grey on the armour. I would suggest using a white primer base. My helmet looks more accurate than my armor.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

Thanks for the info, reez.
I'm still not 100% on which coating method I want to go with. But I want my helmet done so I can get the eyes installed. So I just got a can of plastidip and coated it. That did give it a very nice surface. Here is the helmet with 3 coats of plastidip and 3 coats of primer:

I got some red paint last night. I can't remember the name ATM... It is similar p dark cherry metallic but lighter. I'll get the name later on. Anyways, after work I'm going to do some sanding and body filler then another coat of primer. I got gold metallic pair for a base coat. I should have actual iron man colors on the helm tonight! =D

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

Quick update. Paint has officially started!
I know it's not perfect. But you know what? I decided, it's a foam suit and I want to get it done! I have some plans for aom other amazing builds and this is just for Halloween after all! ;-P

I love this color gold!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

That gold came out looking nice mate.....i love the painting process, especially on projects where you take your time as it really shows in the finish....perfect example with this build

keep up the good work :thumbsup

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

Thanks mark! I really hoped for a little Better results. But it was so hot out that my body filler was curing in like 40 seconds! I gave up and resigned myself to the fact that it's a foam build. Haha. But overall I am very happy with the finish. That is duplicator "sunburst gold metallic" (as per docholiday's thread) it is absolutely perfect for the ironman gold!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

How did you get that bend on the face plate, the two that angle and have the tooth looking slot? Also on most PDO files for thefoam armor I notice things missing like the space between the Face plate and the bottom jaw plate, You can see it in Helagak's Helm. The space is white on the black helm. Any help to figure this stuff out would be greatly apreciated. Maybe a step by step helmet build and if possible armor build would be greatly helpful.

Thank you.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

Hi again, I'm a Noob, found the space on the template. Still need to know how to do the angle tho.:behave

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

Hey, for most of my suit, I used 1/2" anti fatigue floor mat. (about 12mm) on the helm, I used 6nm foam from micheals craft store.
For the "tooth" part, I'm guessing you are talking about the parts on the chin just below the face plate. That I'd just the same foam offset a bit. I'm sorry, I'm not sure exactly what you are asking of me. :(

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

Make sure you check out IMIM2's "tips for newbies from a newbie" thread and jfcustom's tips thread. They have a TON of great tips for new foam builders.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

For a few things done.
Here is the helmet in red. It's duplicator "anodized red metallic" with a gold metallic base coat. It still needs te chin painted gold and a clear coat.

Then I did another eye light test.
Here it is in a lit room:

And dark:

And here is the view thru the helmet in a decently lit room:

And in a pretty dark room:

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

The helmet is about done. It just needs a clear coat. But I need to wait till a less humid day.
The lights come on when the face plate is down and go off when I lift it up.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7

I am at the lighting stage on my helmet too....did you solder the wires directly onto the magnets or did you glue them between the foam and magnet?

I was concerned at melting the foam if i heated the magnets up to apply solder??

Helmet is looking amazing mate:thumbsup

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! Electronics started - page 7
