Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Nice work so far, judging by the round chest plate, you're going for a Mk IV then I guess ? Planning maybe on doing a swapable chest plate with a triangle opening too ? I'd love to see that, two suits for one !

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Yeah, it's a mark IV. I wasn't sure when I started but I like the round chest plate better than the triangle.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Yeah, the helm is the hardest part.

I would do the abs and the cod next and then the back.
A common problem is for people to do the chest and back and then find it is too tight to fit the abs under them.
The neck is also a good item to get done early as it fits under the chest and back so you have to make sure it fits under both.

The rule for Iron Man armor is to work from the most inner layers out so that everything has the proper overlap and size.

Helmets are cool but best saved for last!!

(I did the same thing BTW)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Update time!!
I finished the left forearm. Far from perfect. But not too hateful. I am hoping that plastic coating and paint will cover my mistakes. :)

My plan is to finish the bicep tonight. And since I'm off tomorrow, I have all day to tackle the back piece!

Side question: does anyone know, can you sand plasticoating?

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

I used PlastiDip on my first build (of which, there is a thread I made with a few pictures), and I don't believe sanding it would be the way to go.

The best results I've seen from foam builds were made by DocHoliday. He builds the parts out of foam, coats it in PVA (xrobots idea), and then uses Rondo, which can be sanded and painted. That's what I'm going for now.

Also, the PVA problem you had can be remedied by using Mod Podge spray (per DocHoliday). It's a Matte finish Acrylic sealer that goes on before the Rondo and from what I've seen produces amazing results.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Thanks for the advice, aendrew. I'll look into that.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Yay, update!!! I finished an arm (finally!!!)

Gonna have to mod it a bit to make the hinge work properly. But I'll deal with that when my Chicago screws get here next week. As for now, I'm moving on to the back piece. (I've been dreading that!) hopefully I have something to show later on tonight.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

One more while I take a break from cutting the back templates... I seriously don't know how anyone has the patience to do a pepakura build!!
rfs4K.jpg

I'm not sure what I want to do with the elbow hinge. It seems like I will lose A LOT of my range of motion if I hinge it with screws... I'm thinking about modding the end of the elbow a bit, leaving the elbow disconnected from the bicep and making some "under pieces" out of 1 mm foam to bridge the joints. Any ideas?
I'm not trying for 100% screen accurate here. This is just for Halloween / ironman 3 premiere.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Didnt finish the back piece today. :( but got most of it done...

I'll finish it up tomorrow after work.
And to think, tony actually built a working repulser gauntlet in less time than I've been hot glueing pieces of foam together... :-/

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Hey guys. Ive come up with a bit of a trick for foam building.
When making a external angle or equivilant of a "mountain fold" cutting 45 degree angles works like a champ! But internal angels (like "valley folds") can be a bit of a pain. So when I was building the back piece I came up with this: (please excuse the terrible drawing!)
jG1Fp.png

This only works with 90 deg angles, but you could also add an angle cut to te top piece to get a clean obtuse interior angle.
Excuse me if this is common practice, but I haven't seen this in any of the "tips threads"

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

The back piece is done!! Awwww yeah!!!

And now on to the shoulders... This NEVER ENDS!!! :)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

so the other day i ordered a thing of chicago screw. i bought 1/2" screws since im working with 1/2" foam right.... yeah, just realized that in order to connect TWO pieces of foam, the screws need to be TWICE as long (1")..... ugh... looks like im gonna have a whole pile of useless chicago screws...

I'll take them off your hands. When I start my build, I'm hoping to use 1/4 inch foam

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

I have a couple ideas on how to use them still. But if it comes to the point that they are no good to me, they are yours. :)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

UPDATE TIME!!
I've been kinda busy so yesterday all I got done was installing the clasps on the chest and back. So they fit nicely. But no real point showin pics o that I installed them exactly like stealth showed how to in his theherotutorials video. (Thanks Stealth!!)

I also completed the right bicep. I am amazed at how much better my pieces are coming out! I'm fairly confident that next time I try a helmet it won't e cringe worthy!! Haha!

Here are some pics of the biceps next to each other for comparison. The new one is on the left in all pics.
