Iron Man MK 42/45 Build

I decided I wanted something Iron Man ish in my cosplay wardrobe so I started working on a Mark 42 suit. My figuring there was that with the mk 42, even if I didn't finish the suit, I could wear pieces of it and still make sense. I started with a gauntlet. I built a cardboard model but ruined that experimenting with plastidip. Then I made another duplicate model and tried using spackle to smooth it out. When that failed to meet my expectations I turned to body filler. Unfortunately the layer of spackle ended up creating a moisture bubble underneath the bondo and it cracked and fell off while I was etching it.

R.I.P. MK 42 Gauntlet:cry
I still wanted to proceed with my suit but I didnt have the heart to make another gauntlet so I decided to make a helmet. I started with a cardboard base using my own pattern, but somewhere along the way I decided I liked the look of the Mark 45 helmet better. Its similar to the Mark 42 in most respects, but different enough to warrant editing my pattern. After a lot of trial and error and hot glue, I came up with this.

I bondo-d the face plate and sanded it down, then applied a light silver coat to see where i needed to add more bondo and which areas needed to be touched up with spot cream. This is the faceplate as of this morning.

Update! I finished bondoing the rest of the helmet, I ended up attaching the face plate to the rest of the helmet, for now anyway, its just a lot simpler than contorting both pieces to fit perfectly together and then holding them there long enough for the bondo to dry. I decided to just make it all one piece and i might cut the face plate off at some point in the future. As of last night the jaw was separate from the rest of the helmet but I attached it just a few minutes ago. This is from last night. I just set the faceplate and cranium on top of the jaw loosely for photo purposes. I sprayed it with metallic again just to see where i needed to patch.

It needs to be sanded a bit more in a few areas and evened out, and the eyes need to be evened out because they arent symmetrical at the moment, so ill use a dremel for that, as well as the rest of the etching, but its a good start!

After some evening out, sanding, and etching, and another paint coat...

It will be heavily weathered when its finished. Mostly to cover up all the dings and sanding and etching mishaps:lol
