Finally getting somewhere :D

Silicone for this part, and the new main assembly is being re printed. More progress to come, stay tuned!

Re: Iron Man Mk 25 STRIKER helmet 3d print (W.I.P)

Made the mold for the faceplate. May need to remake it, though. There were some air bubbles in the mold itself, I used Mold Max Stroke and frankly the stuff is a little too thick. I'll make the new one with Mold Max 30 instead and if I need to thicken it any, I've got plenty of the thickener on hand.

That said, I'm happy with the cast. I used Smooth On 305 for that. Other than the little imperfections from the air bubbles in the mold, I'd say it was a good pull :)

Almost done re printing the main. More pics on the way, stay tuned!

Re: Iron Man Mk 25 STRIKER helmet 3d print (Faceplate Molded)

Nice work. Although perfect castings are always the goal, those look acceptable and easy to fill. What wall thickness are you printing at? That's hi-res also, right? I have a Makerbot Replicator 2 and generally it works well. Can't level the build plate at the edes no matter what I do though. I usually print right at or near the center of the build plate. Think of how cool an RT you can come up with using your printer!

Thanks for the kind words! The wall thickness is about 4-5mm thick. I need it at least that thick to print parts on my Lulzbot Taz. The slicer program for it has some serious flaws with thinner walls. And the model is indeed hi res.

Also, I believe I can help you with your leveling problem with your Makerbot. I had to replace my build plate for mine, the stock acrylic ones are known for warping, and that's why you can't get it to level right. You'll want to get the glass bed upgrade. Once I did mine, all the leveling problems were solved and I could print on the whole build plate, not just the center. As I recall, I spent 80 bucks or something for the new build plate, it's totally worth it!

Great Work. I was wonder what type of glue you use to bond your printed segments together. I just started working with my MakerBot replicator 2x and looking for glue options.

First I bond the parts with Loctite Super glue (gel). This is temporary, though. Super glue and PLA can be tricky. Sometimes it seems like the bond is good, like you would expect. Sometimes it isn't, and barely holds at all. But again, it's temporary and only meant to hold the parts together.

What really holds it together is the ABS/Acetone paste that I smooth on inside of the helmet, along the seams. I use this because there is no heat created, like with epoxies or bondo for example. PLA has a rather low melting point for plastic, as compared to some of the other 3d printing filament like ABS, so I try to keep any heat away. It was, after all, heat that ruined the first print.

The ABS/acetone glue, made thick, works good I've found. It may take a couple days to fully harden, depending on how thick you apply it. But it gets pretty hard and I haven't had any seams come apart so far.

Re: Iron Man Mk 25 STRIKER helmet 3d print (Faceplate Molded)

Well, some more set backs on this............

It's been about a week of fighting the main helmet re printing. First, I had a problem with one of the cuts. One of the cuts was coming up all messed up, despite repairing it, in the slicing program for my Taz. I was wanting to print all of the main assembly on the Taz, but this was seeming to not be possible.

So, printed that particular cut on my Makerbot, and while they printed perfectly and the slicing software showed the model just fine, they were smaller. Just a tiny, tiny bit, but small enough to be no good.

Well, damn. Back to the drawing board on that cut. Later on, however, I ended up downloading the latest version on the slicing program for the Taz. Didn't know there was one :facepalm

This version, long story short, had a feature that helped me correct the problem. YAY!

So, I load up the .stl's to print, everything is looking good, and four hours into the print I notice the left side of my print isn't sticking to the bed very much anymore. It appears after analysis that my heated bed is going bad. The left side is not getting hot.

So, today I'll be calling support to order a new one. :)

Re: Iron Man Mk 25 STRIKER helmet 3d print (Faceplate Molded)

Looking forward to this build and I know you're working hard on this. Sorry it has given you so much trouble.

No worries at all, brother! I love this stuff. Learning, and hiccups are no worry to me, it just fuels me further, to do better.:)

Also, already got the new heated bed on the way. With the .stl problem worked out it's just a matter of a week or two and the main will be all printed and ready for mastering :thumbsup

Re: Iron Man Mk 25 STRIKER helmet 3d print (Faceplate Molded)

That is fantastic news in my own greedy, selfish, I want to build this out kinda way. :D

Re: Iron Man Mk 25 STRIKER helmet 3d print (Faceplate Molded)

Finally, some updates :)

Got the new mold made for the faceplate. Much better results this time.............

I've also got the new helmet printed and assembled. I was going to start smoothing today, but it's a rainy day, so I'll wait until tomorrow. More progress coming soon!!!

Well, I don't know about the rest of the suit, but I've been toying with the thought of printing up the jackhammers.

These files are not being shared. I paid someone money to model this up for me, with the intention of selling casts of the helmet.

I understand that you are new here, and that your excited to build some things. But you really need to do a better job of reading the information on the original first post of the thread. A lot of the information is there, and would quickly answer a lot your questions.

As far as the Sneaky helmet, that model belongs to another member, my friend deta. He recently stopped sharing the model, due to yet another thief trying to claim work as their own. I'm sorry, but that model is not for me to share or redistribute.
