iron man mark vi build

Thanks Darth I know it not anything to really look at yet but man I hope it comes out like I want it to. Keep checking I will be making some more progress here soon

Thanks REG, I should be making my duct tape dummy here in the next few days to display all the armor I have so far and to keep it from sagging while t is waiting to be hardened

What a great read this thread has been. I have been working slowly on my IM MK6 since early in the year. I am recording my hours and costs like a time sheet.
Congrats on the baby. Out of the three kids I have one got the artistic bug and is willing to wear my costume but falls short of finishing his own DeadMau5 head so teh yearlong build may not be for him.

I see you are around to making the brace. What is this actually for? Is it meant to be worn? I am guessing it is the undersuit for the chest. I am making my duct tape dummy tonight and have started glueing the chest. My helmet is all fiberglassed. The arms are nearly finished along with the neck and cod and a few other pieces. I have started hinging the arms and will probably go with the LED strip above the sunglasses route for the eyes.

Good build please keep going so I can learn from your mistakes and not my own. haha

no prob velociraptor ... I will continue my build and try to stay ahead of you. lol ... The chest brace fits the cavity for the arc reactor in it and I think it is for both chest and back support. I can't fiberglass for a while due to the weather but should be able to really get down on that stage when it warms up since I should have every piece pepped by then. Good idea on the eyes. I am not exactly sure on how I am gonna handle that part just yet but have some ideas floating around.

I made my manequin last night. I made two mistakes. One I used the cheapest duct tape I could find. It is so thin it doesn't keep a good shape. I have not stuffed it yet so it may be OK. The second mistake was that I put tube socks on and stretched them as high as they would go. These went on the outside of the long johns. When I got out of the suit the areas of the socks shrunk back down and crinkled the duct tape. Again I hope that with the stuffing I am using it will stretch back out. At worst I can just do my calves again.
I picked up a wired set of flexible LEDs from Auto Zone. I went with blue and although they will not be movie acurate I want the range of visibility that full lenses provide. The led packs are already wired to a battery pack for in-store testing and they come in white, blue, green or red. I may even make it so I can switch them out easily. Red eyes in the dark would be pretty wicked.

If you have the room for fiberglassing and are just quitting because of the toxic fumes then I have to recommend West System Epoxy. It has no smell at all and only needs the temp to be 45 to cure. It is more expensive then fiberglass polyester resin like Bondo brand. I order the fast cure by the gallon form Aircraft Spruce and with delivery it is $130. Epoxy is super slippery and I have to glass things in stages so that pieces dont pull away from their own weight. It is used for airplanes so I think it is good enough for me.

Thanks for warning me about your mistakes velociraptor on the duct tape dummy. I am having to hold off on the fiberglassing due to having to do that stage outside and there is snow still on the ground right now in my area here in colorado. it's a bummer but what can ya do. I am still pepping the legs and sill have those and the duct tape dummy together soon. Maybe by then it will be warm enough to fiberglass again.

Just an FYI, if you aren't into using the Smooth-Cast 321 | Locations | Reynolds Advanced Materials - Denver, CO | Reynolds Advanced Materials | Everything for Mold Making & Casting (Which, if memory serves me correctly, is cheaper than the West System), West System appears to have several distributors around Denver: WEST SYSTEM | Epoxy Resin Dealers and Distributors

I used cheap duct tape on a dummy once. The problem I ran into were a series of blowouts from the pressure of the stuffing (I use recycled grocery bags that I snag from the local store's recycle bin). if you can put what you already have back on and go back over it with 3M or Gorilla Tape, you'll be better off...

Great build, thus far!

Darth pinhead, Thanks for the tips on the smoothcast distributors here in denver. I had not even looked into that thus far. I actually planned to use the recycled grocery bags as well to stuff my duct tape dummy. The duck tape I am using IS actually called duck tape and feels pretty solid so far. We will see. The holiday preparations have kept me from making the dummy so far. bummer I know. But please everyone keep sharing your experiences and thoughts and I shall do the same. Thanks for the compliments everyone. I hope not to disappoint.

No more donut breaks! Get busy!!!!! JK." Lol.... Keep up that good pepping!...w'ell see you done before you realize it! - DeeRaaaaay!

AAWWWW!!! why do I gotta give up those mouth watering chocolate filled moments of sweet sugar rush inducing slices of heaven ... how am supposed to finish now? lol I am three peices away from finishing the left thigh yeah buddy

OK so I sat down and glued the last three little pieces to the thigh and started to cut out the pieces for the shin. soon I will have one leg pepped and ready to fiberglass. The game continues, it feels like watching a movie with a great plot where you get about 75% through the movie and the story thickens. I can't wait for volume two and fiberglass this story. lol got my kindle for Christmas and can't stop reading books when I get the time these days. but making time for the armor once again.

My build continues. I finally got all the ab pieces glassed and also the brace piece. Working on arm hinges currently and waiting until the brace is set up before I glass my chest and back pieces. When they are finished I will have the entiire torso in glass and will not pep another thing until they are complete. Thats the plan. I want something to show for my work.

Trying to find on the forums pictures of the Mk VI collar plates and what their actual position is. Are they on the brace but under the back and front pieces? If you have seen any let me know please.

Duct tape dummy will be trashed this weekend. The tape is aweful and teh stuffing I used is worse. I make maps for a living so I thought I would fill it with hundreds of shredded maps. Beides scaring the wife whenever she walks downstairs he is useless as is. I will save his PVC skeleton and redo the tape and stuff him with something else.

Ok so I am in the middle of moving right now ... aand glad to be doing so ... am reading threads and remembered I had some older pics I did not post messing around one night looking at what I have accomplished so far. At the time of taking the pictures I did not have the right thigh, and right calf done. I also am about to finish the right boot in the next couple of days here. Sad part about that is I have to pep like seven tabs on one edge of the toe piece and six more little pieces to attach to complete it. but the build does still continue ... so with further ado here they are
