iron man mark vi build

I know it was not much of an update but i was on here and wanted to state the idea ... as it turns out the heat gun technique works like a charm. I drilled four holes in the helmet to thread some wire through to hold it in place while I heated up the surface with the heat gun. Then while wearing some thick leather gloves (due to the helmet being freaking hot) I applied pressure to the sides of the helmet in areas experimenting to see how exactly it would need to bend and found that I will need to sand down a few small areas to get the faceplate to fit snugly. So although i did not correct the issues completely, I definitely found the true problem areas and am ready to tackle those tomorrow afternoon. The holes I drilled are only 1/8" of an inch and will be extremely easy to repair. I will get some pics of those up tomorrow. I will most likely add some fiberglass to the inside of the helmet at the temple area as well to give it some strength.
 
ok so I got to fiberglass the inside of the helmet today and am just waiting for it to dry. I drilled 1/8th inch holes in several places to tie off spots of the helmet of faceplate that were misaligned. I tied them off with some small pieces of wire I had lying around. I then heated up the helmet with a heat gun to help shape both pieces more and then went a little further and cut a wire clothes hanger to create a support for the part that covers the brow. I laid fiberglass over the hanger and across the temples to strengthen the helmet and will most likely hit it all with the heat gun one more time. After that I am going to correct any imperfections with a small amount of bondo. so far so good =)
 
Thanks guys ... I know the wire hanger in the helmet is ugly but i figure no one will see it when I am done so oh well. yeah indie, i gotta tell ya that the heat gun worked great making the resin soft and pliable. wow and Ricardo who has been a member since 2009 used one of five posts on my thread. That is awesome. I must be doing something right - lol. keep watching folks it can only get better from here.
 
I just joined the site today, I hope you guys don't mind me commenting on what you guys have done but it's amazing. I have been checking threads and forums for weeks to find accuarate builds and inexpensive ways to make a Iron Man suit. I like what you guys are doing keep up the good work. I will be starting my build soon, hopefully I can find all the materials I need to get started.
 
Ok sorry I was gone so long, Had a beautiful baby girl who has taken up all of my free time. Considering where I left off with my helmet last I needed to coat it with bondo and sand again to smooth it out real good. I took about three hours really cleaning up the low spots and sanding it down real nice. The surface came out great as far as I a concerned. Now I need to work on a few areas like where the faceplate marries the helmet and create the inner lip for the faceplate to sit on. Also I have begun working on a hinge system trying to use materials I have laying around. I have made some progress in that area but as it is my first attempt at engineering (what a project). This has really been a slow but fun endeavor. Also I happened to plan and price out the electronics for my helmet. I want to keep in mind other aspects of my armor during all of this and that is what is keeping me from rushing out and buying the items now. Also I noticed a few minor details that need correction with the lines on my helmet but so far nothing discouraging with my build. I have gotten to read up on some of the builds that inspired me and you guys (graphic jordan, black dynamo, azuriel, robo, and don roberts all in the front of the list) and my God have you all really set the bar, great work everyone.
 
lol ... funny ... thats one costume I dont wanna make lol ... and sorry about the omit stealth you are also on the front of my inspiring list =) ... I am still moving forward with my armor just not anywhere as fast as i wanted to ... being a daddy is number one priority but I got plans I gotta see to the end. maybe some day I can embarrass my little girl by showing up to school in the costume and asking her to lunch lol ...

I like the dressing up and going to her school bit lol

M.I.A. ... I was lost in space for a bit lol ... you guys have all done such great work so far. BD your armor has come so far and looks astounding. Thanks by the way, she is most definitely a gift.
 
Oh man I am crazy excited!!! Today is the first day I got to put my helmet over my head. It took about twenty minutes to cut the lower back piece off the helmet and started examining what I need to do to reattach it. I am thinking building a lip around the inside of both the helmet and the lower piece then using magnets. I am also currently working on a hinge system for the helmet using remote control circuits from a cheap little RC car I had laying around for years. The plan is to use small motors in each ear piece to drive the arms for each side of the hinge pushing the lower portion of the face mask out a little bit then lifting the whole faceplate above the helmet. (hope that was clear ... lol) I have been working diligently for the past few days trying to figure out how to make my design work correctly. It is coming to me in these small lightning strikes designing this hinge system. Now I need to go get more bondo but until then ... I am on the drawing board planning ... oh YEAH!!!:)
