iron man mark vi build

Alright so I managed to find a little time to cut, score, fold, and label each of the 15 AB sections ... also found time today to apply the first coat of resin to my helmet ... had to take advantage of the nice day outside and chose to throw that first layer on ... feels great to make another one of those milestone steps toward completing the armor ... got a couple runs in the resin when I was not looking but they will sand out ... also gotta get the details in the jaw separate after I remove the faceplate when I fiberglass the inside ... also found a sample piece of foam I may use to line the inside of the armor with as padding ... here are some update pics of the resin coat and the ABs prepped, ready to put together

Dude, looking amazing man!

I'm a bit confused on Abs and Neck stuff myself since I want to make them good. And everyone who has made one always seems to say that it works better in pieces and that really confuses me.

Also some people have made Latex necks as well, mega confusing!!

Resin as you said, if you get drips, they can easily be sanded down later. That is why I'm not overly worried. Although, I feel blessed that my Resin had a red twinge to it so I could see where I was applying, looks like you had a fairly clear one!

After I get back from my trip to utah I will complete the ABs and start working out a way to make them functional ... I am thinking that once they are hardened I will apply the backing foam and then use a solid cloth backing behind that to make them one unit that has all the flexibility I am looking for ... on a side note ... I was bummed to to be missing the linkin park concert in denver due to my trip to utah but my wife surprised me by takin me to the linkin park concert last night here in utah ... it was awesome ... they got me all the way to the front door of the stadium before i knew what was going on ... sneaky people ... i had a great time ... but i kinda miss working on my iron man armor a little lol

I now officially HATE you! Linkin Park was the first band I ever really got into. Never seen them live (Nor any other band in fact) and now I'm jealous!

Keep up with the great work. I'm still doing mine, just trying to finish off the fibreglass coating on the inside and that is a right ***** to apply. Although, makes me worry a little too incase I ever want to detach the faceplate :S

Actually yeah ... I house sat for someone this weekend with a garage and took the time to start fiber glassing my helmet ... I got one layer on most of the helmet except for the jaw and took the time to separate the faceplate when I fiber glassed it ... came out pretty good if I do say so myself and with a little luck the heat gun trick will allow me to shape the jaw line a little better so that it is sunk in a tad more ... other then paper discoloration I think it still looks the same but will start the bondo process soon and start to sand it to make it look smooth ... still pepping too ... I got the spine pieces done and foot coverings I started pepping the hip pods this weekend as well ... i will upload some pics of my helmet in a few minutes here

So here are the pics of what I have fiber glassed so far and the face plate removed ... it looks like the face plate does not fit great on the helmet after it was removed that is actually just me setting it on there for the pics not the fit ... you can see that the jaw is not fiber glassed yet and the eyes are not fiber glassed as I will be cutting those out ... I also have to fiber glass the ear pucks then it is on to the bondo and sanding portion ... during the removal of the faceplate I removed too much of the edging around the faceplate so I will have to build that up again but it is no big deal as I was going to build those up a little anyway to create a good fit and seal between the faceplate and the helmet anyway ... got a couple air bubbles in the fiber glassing that I did not catch til it was hardened but plan to slice the air bubbles open and fill them with resin so that should take care of that ... decent progress so far ... I am happy

Sweet, good to see that you are finally starting on the fibreglass. Just make sure to stay patient and you will be fine.

Also love the fact that I can be seen on the computer screen :p

I gotta tell ya mykii ... watching you fiberglass your helmet made me really want to get mine fiberglassed ... so I went ahead and started the process ... its exciting and I am still pepping the other parts as I go anyway ... I keep getting ideas throughout this whole build ...

funny I did not even notice i got our mugs in the shot ... thats awesome ... told you i was gonna post pics right after the post before that

Yeah exactly buddy.
Glad I've inspired you. I've only got like 3 more 2cm areas left for the fibreglass and I will have it finished. Then its all about the filler on the outside. I'm hoping when I get some spare cash I'll get the card and xacto knife that I need to start a new piece.

KEEP up the great work!

How much cardstock do you buy at a time Mykii? I get like 250 sheets per pack and have printed about two packs worth to complete the armor ... including some redo's ... I finished pepping the hip pods today and start on the upper brace tonight ... I will be cutting it out and scoring the fold lines hopefully this evening ... all in all I have printed about 600 sheets of cardstock due to errors and bad choice of cardstock the first time at it ... I found a better quality cardstock from office depot that I have really enjoyed working with and will continue to use that brand from now on ... how many layers of fiber glass are you putting on the inside, one or two? ... I think one is enough but I am thinking about trying out the fiber glass resin on cotton cloth to see if it works and if it does I am going to put a second layer on the inside of my helmet using that method ... also on a side note I am thinking of making the mechanical parts for my faceplate to move up and down using molded fiber glass resin. I will scan in a basic mockup of my mech design for people to critique and point out any possible flaws ... also would like to hear opinions about using the resin method to make the parts and if it will structurally hold up to the stress if the parts are about an 1/8 of an inch thick. The idea is to mold the parts in clay and pour the resin into the molds, allowing them to harden and use the first run as a master to mold both the left and right sides to get a consistent size. I have the piece that gave me the idea and will throw a picture of that up as well to show a physical representation of my idea (keep in mind that the piece is not shaped correctly, just a fluke that gave me the idea)

Well, depends on how thick the resin is whether it will hold correctly, although it will never be as strong as a good piece of metal. But it should definitely hold for a little bit.

I haven't actually bought any cardstock yet. My dad had just enough for the helmet. So I will be getting some soon. But it all depends on when I get the money to get hold of it.

I have used 1 layer of fibreglass and it does seem to hold VERY well, but may be compelled to add a second layer in some of the structure points like the corners so it has that extra bit of toughness just incase it gets kicked/dropped etc (Although, while sanding I managed to drop it and it landed right on the top of the helmet from a good 5 foot drop onto a corner of solid concrete. Not a mark :O )

I think alot of things with these helmets are your own personal preference to the build. You do what you wish and then see how it turns out. Not one person can tell you how to do your own build. It is about you and how you build it.

Well I am sure that not that many people want to see the pep stage of a build but I got a few pics to show some of the work I have been putting into this so far I need to update followers with something and here is some of what I have been working on the last couple days as I have found the time I cut, scored, folded and sorted all the parts for the back again ... then I began to assemble the parts a few hours ago and this is what i got done while helping my wife with her homework ... the back piece that looks almost all the way pepped is the second one I have done and did not like how rough it turned out so I am doing it again ... the last pic shows the part of the newest one i started ... as it is turning out I think I will keep this one it is lining up 100% better then the last ones ...

Are you kidding?

It's the pep stage of the build that seems the most difficult as nobody shows that bit so it's all fingers and thumbs and guesswork :lol I like the way you lay out the pieces before assembly, it'd make my life a whole lot easier but I don't have the room to do that... when I'm not sleeping in the bed I got stuff all over it :ninja

It's a good way to visualize your build. I do it in my head, picture the pieces on the prop then draw it, and re-draw it. Lol Great Job dude! Can't wait to see more stuff! Keep Building!....

Thanks guys ... yeah laying out the parts helps make the build faster and visualize the final outcome somewhat ... I will start taking some close ups of the pepping process at what I think are some critcal points to show that stage of the build farther ... agian thanks for the comments guys ...

Sweet one dude, hows the scale working out for you?

I love the idea of laying out the parts like that. Much easier to keep track of what goes where.

So far the scale is working out pretty good for me I am kinda worried about the cod piece but it should not hinder too much on the build ... Malmey ... jumping off bridges is fun if your using a parachute but other then taht jsut watch out for rocks ... and boats lol
