Iron Man "House Party Protocol" Project

Going through what ones I have and then will worry about building the ones I don't. No sense in reinventing the wheel when some of these folks here have great helmets available.

Made some progress with the Mk 40 today. I went through several rounds of sanding to get the helmet to where I wanted it after I fixed the eyes. Once I finished that, I went back and hit the helmet with dark grey primer to see where I needed more spot putty. I went through 2 rounds of base layer sanding with primer and finally got it to the base layer paint color. This is not the helmet color, but the underlying metal color for the dmg I am creating with the masking fluid.

Primer stage 1:

Metallic base layer:

Base layer with first round of latex masking fluid:

I should be able to start the detail layers tomorrow and get a lot done if it is as warm as it was today. Stay tuned!

Bad ass)))) :thumbsup

what is the masking fluid? you are the first i have heard using something like that??
shotgun is looking good, and the end results with the weathering and damage is awesome..

It's a latex-based fluid (also known as liquid frisket) that creates a buffer layer between the current layer of paint and any layers you apply over it. If you're allergic to latex as I am, you need to be careful with it but it's great for multi-layered painting that I like so much. I have a weathering addiction because I don't generally like making "clean" armor or helmets. That's just my personal preference though. Learning how to apply it where damage is likely to occur and then being able to make it pop with sanding and/or airbrushing is the real trick.

I went into a good amount of detail on some of my weathering techniques in another thread:

The type I use isn't the thickest out there, but I prefer for it to be a bit thinner because it's easier for me personally to make smaller details when desired.

Hope this helps!

I have gotten 2 layers of the base color on the bucket today but I will likely let it dry over night because it is a bit tacky. A word of caution for those of you not familiar with using the painter's tape... if you apply the tape while the helmet is tacky, you can easily pull off the sheen of the paint with the tape and you will see every outline of every piece of tape. It's pretty ugly, so be patient. :)

Got some more work done on the Mark 40 today. I managed to get the paint layers done and then remove the latex masking fluid.

After the masking fluid was removed, I hit the face plate area with 0000 steel wool and the high areas with 100 grit sandpaper to accentuate the damage.

I just need to work on the eyes, black washing, and airbrushing. After it is done, I may look at a way to create the visor for this bucket but I haven't decided yet. Stay tuned!
