Hi guys.

Yes this is another Ironman costume thread :)
Yep this is another Pep Ironman costume thread :)

Here is my first test of Pepakura.
What do you think ? the shapes looks to be good ?

It will be my "Test" helmet for the resin, because I'm not able to put my head in it :S. I'm 5'7'' so I have the great idea to reduce the scale to 95% ... what a mistake :). It was possible before I "glue" the back piece , but not now.

Here is the pics:

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

It's the right size don't go making another. I guess I should put a note or something in my thread for all the new guys, don't know why everyone has a problem with this.
You have to either make the bottom back section removable or the chin/jaw. Here like this.

With the back section in place (don't mind the jaw it's hinged)

With it removed.

And the 3 parts.

Finhead > That's a good idea. I'm gonna do that. Thank you.
Do you think the shape of the helmet looks to be good ?

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

STEALTH > Thank you. I'm really happy of the result for a first test. Hope the resining/smoothing will give a good result too.

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

Finhead version is the best i seen, you using the same themplate is a great start. Impressed how much better the pep files have become.

So much Ironman related props happening. This is exiting and great. :D

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

Thank you TMP.

Yesterday, I've made my first test of resining. I've pep a little piece of the shoulder to test the resin polyester. but after 12 hours the piece is still sticky (but the resin in my mixing cup has dry).

Do you think I've put too less Liquid hardener ? I thought I had put too much ... :confused

I use "glossy paper" because it's the harder I have found, is it a problem ?

Thank you guys.

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

12hrs, yeah that's not right. Should be hard in appox 20-30 min. It will not be tack free just hard. It will stay tacky until you either fill over it or prime it. What ratio did you use for the resin/hardener?

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

you may have not mixed it enough and as you were dipping the brush in the mixture it may have mixed it a little more here and there everytime you dipped it in the resin.

So that may be why the left over was cured

or you need more hardner.
It happend to me before. If you mixed a proper batch over that coat you just did
it should cure

glossy paper? is the resin not soaking into the paper ?

It was really a little piece (the bolt of the shoulder). I just use 6 or 7 teaspoon of resin
and less than 1/2 teaspoon of liquid hardener
And finally I use just a little amount of the resin mix.

So it will stay tacky until I put another "correct" resin layer ?

I mix during 1 min (but as I said to finhead, it was a little amount of resin).

About the glossy paper, the color of the paper is changing, so I suppose the resin is soaking into the paper, but perhaps lesser than in a normal paper.
Is it really important ? the resin is not supposed to cure even if it is not soaking into the paper ?

And thank you for your help guys.
Edit : sorry 2 posts

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

Stealth has a good point. But I'm curious as to how warm the room is you're working in too. And I'm assuming this resin is exothermic. Meaning the warmer it get's the faster/harder it will cure. If it doesn't get warm enough, it may never fully cure.

If you're doing this in a cold room the thin layer on the pep may be radiating a lot of its heat before it gets to chance to really work. But the resin in the cup easily keep itself warm enough to fully cure.

A heat gun or a hair dryer can really help out with this.

I've had similar problems with exothermic materials but I could be wrong.

Is it possible you're doing this in a pretty cold environment? If so, the resin in the cup easily gets warm enough to fully cure because there's so much in one place. But with a thin layer on the pep, it may not get warm enough to fully cure.

great point

This is in my basement. +/- 12°C (54°F). The window is open (because it said that I need a ventilated area).

I'm gonna try with a hair dryer.
Thank you.

You could always try brushing a little extra hardener directly over the tacky coat to solidify it.

I had to do this once or twice in my early days of resining. Worked for me, maybe it'll work for you too.

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

Ok TheNickfox. Thanks.

Arranged in the correct order :

1. Try with an hair dryer
2. Try to brush a little amount of hardener
3. Add a new layer of resin (with more harderner ? or the proportions looks to be good ? 5%)
4. If it does not work, try with another paper more absorbant.

Correct ?

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

Hi again guys. Not good news.

I 've try with a hair dryer, it helps to dry, but it still sticky (I can see my fingerprints when I put my finger on it).

So I've try to put more harderner. And to make a second layer of resin.
Once again, it does not dry (but the resin in my mixing cup has dry again).

So I've try with another product (with a colored hardener in paste) a third layer. Same problem.

I don't know what to do.

Here are the products

What do you think ? any other idea ? to thin or too thick layer of resin ?

Re: [Iron Man] Need help and advices

Test number 5.

I've tried with two differnt pieces of paper. Normal card paper and my glossy paper (no diffrences in the result).
I try to mix much more. During 1 min with more energy.

It's really working better. This time it has dry, (somme littlte spot is still a little sticky, but really not comparable to other tests. I'm gonna try to mix it more for the test number six.
