Iron Man Butt Gaps

Nice shot Mr Fett-- any other pics of your suit? Do you make/assemble it yourself?
That Bunns of Steel DVD really paid off!

Post #62: http://www.therpf.com/f24/show-me-your-iron-man-suit-156463/index3.html

It's a TMP suit I bought used here on the RPF back in '09. I got the chest light on Ebay then (nice glass front and all), and figured out how to make the eye lights myself.

The softgoods I had made and the boots were goth platform boots I had from an older Jason Voorhees costume and when the TMP armor arrived I found the armor feet fit perfectly over the platform boots which was great because:

- It keeps the fiberglass feet from nailing the concrete when walking
- It puts me at the height of the practical stunt suits made for the first movie (6'4"-6'5" range)

Nice Suit---I almost purchased 1 from them a while back...but recently had one made from another RPF'r..problem is..doesn't fit me...I'm a little too muscular in the arms and calves so I really hate to start trying to modify it--not to experienced...what kind of size are you-- height/weight--shirt, etc..did you have to have to modify to fit into TMP's? I am totally bummed cause this suit I have rocks...hate to just display it...I wanna have some fun w/ it.
The bottom legs look similar to mine...but I'm afraid is I get them on...they will be permanent. HA They are slender..

What im intending to do with my thigh and butt gaps is as follows:

Ive bought a pair of metallic red spandex leggings which im going to turn into cycling shorts. I got a pattern of the 'gap' on the front and the back of the thighs made out of paper, which I then cut up into 'Iron Man style' armour plates, making each plate slimmer than it needs to be to fill the gap. Ill then glue these plates directly onto the shorts. Hopefully what ill end up with is something that still has alot of movement, but that looks less like im wearing a body suit underneath. With the plates being on the shorts, the plates should slide under the tops of the thighs and cod when walking.

Ill also experiment with making an additional piece of armor at the top of the front thigh to replicate the actual Iron Man armor's look. But im a little worried that it will restrict movement too much.

I add an extra layer of rubber over the butt area like this and it works everytime with my suit builds.

Thanks quovadis for the pic. It's a pain for me (aka first time builder) to go balls to the walls and start with a full armor suit based on a character that is CGI or Comic based. So many things that look cool but don't actually work for a person inside. I'm still trying to figure out what to where underneath, but still fill it right. The suit already restricts movement.

I made a pair of pleather pleated hot pants-I am away from my laptop right now, but I'll post pics when I get back to it tomorrow.

Look for a professional seamstress and have a full body suit sewn using shiny/gloss spandex. It usually works. If your using the mk5 or mk42 though better get a silver one.

I feel that this topic should receive WAY more attention that it is getting..

I really don't understand why some people put a couple of hundred hours to build their armor but stop there, and simply wear something black or red underneath.. To me, to keep the illusion, it should be pushed to the limit of the doable, with the same passion that the suit was built in the first place!

I totally agree man. Anyone can make the general shape of an Iron Man suit, but the ones that truly stand out are the ones that every inch look the part.

Anyway it would be nice to find a solution/different solutions to this so we can contribute to the forum. So yes, we should give this topic way more attention.

As much as I eventually want to fill in the gaps of my suit to finish off the look......
What one doesn't realize is how hot these suits are when you wear them.... I am usually in mine for 3-4 hours at a time for charity events and what not, or even at a convention, and I normally drop 4-5lbs of water weight each time I take the suit off.... If every gap was filled, the suit couldn't breath at all, it barely breaths now..... Even with 6 fans in the chest and back armor...

I'm glad to get your input here.. Your IM build is actually what brought me on TheRPF in the first place!
We couldn't have a better example of somebody who's really using his armor.. maybe you could give us feedback on what you think would be a really bad idea.. I must admit that I hadn't thought about how hot it would get in the suit if every inch of it would be sealed, and I'm not sure how practical would be some ideas (some ideas looks great on a static display but wouldn't work well while worn for real..). I really think that Onephattsi2's expertise would be an asset here..

I don't want to hijack the thread but if the OP doesn't mind, I'd like to share three ideas I had that applied to all "gaps", not just specificaly the "butt gap"

(those ideas are more about modyfing the undersuit than modying the armor)

1) Instead of using a regular morphsuit, I was thinking about buying some fabric and sewing my own undersuit; Here are examples of fabric that caught my eyes :

2) To give a robotic (or hydraulic) feel to the armpit gap, I though about using metal cable conduit that I would sew on top of the fabric.. going for a look similar to this:

Flexible_steel_conduit.jpg

3) I thought I could also add a couple of wires (both end having the connector shown below) that I could rivet ON TOP of the undersuit, giving an even more robotic look to it

Other cool ideas to think about, puffy paint to simulate electrical wires, or a fully detailed "printed" morphsuit (dye sub) recreating the desired design in all gaps. I'd really like to have this option but, as far as I know, nobody did that yet.. and my Illustrator skills aren't quite there yet

My 2 cents! :)

Well, usually the more realistic the suit, the more uncomfortable it is to wear. It really depends if you're willing to sacrifice the look for the wearability. Personally I'm willing to bear the heat. Anyway, I had a similar idea about the armpit section with using cables or wires. I would even use small pistons if I could get my hands on some.
