Iron Man 3 (Post-release)

There's alot of things that annoyed me about this film...if I wasn't an Iron Man fan I could look past it because of its entertainment value, but I left unsatisfied. Here's why: (spoilers)

They take an epic well established villain, turn him into a complete joke, then decide to make the scientist the big bad wolf all because he got his feelings hurt by Tony 13 years ago on a roof top and now wants revenge in the form of world domination. Funny? Sure. Surprising? YUP. But that's about it. Kind of a kick in the balls..

His suits...oh boy was I looking forward to the new suits and what they could do, too bad they got sliced up after a few seconds of screen time then blown to pieces with near zero indication of what they we're capable of. Even the star of the film, the mark 42, did nothing but fly around and fall to pieces. Anyone would think he ditched the gold titanium alloy for pepakura and body filler. The mark 3 took a tank shell to the face without leaving a dent for christs sake! Why did they 'reveal' half a dozen new suits before the movie, and then not actually use them for anything more than cannon fodder? Was the space suit even in the film?

Rhodey gets a new suit with a nice big shoulder cannon....that doesn't get used....not once.
An extremis woman grabs iron patriots wrist, Rhodey threatens her, and then instead of the bad ass battle involving the iron patriot and his new double-barrelled toy everyone was expecting, he's all of a sudden locked up in a dungeon. Did I miss something here? Maybe Aldrich should have just held Tony's hand from the beginning, seems to work wonders for disabling high tech suits.

They shot Rebecca Hall, she's too hot to die!! And her death felt meaningless, wrong timing.

To sum things up, for its entertainment value alone, I'd watch it again, it was the funniest of the 3 films. But for me, the rest was underwhelming. Sadly.

Jordy you just explained how I felt. Good job!

Okay, I have a question. Mandarin was a smokescreen for Killian and AIM, but all the Mandarin videos featured the Ten Rings flag that was also in the first film. So was Killian funding the Ten Rings way back then as part of a long con in his endgame? Was he thus party in some capacity to Tony's capture?

Cool movie, a little dark but cool. Found it interesting that the tag says "Tony Stark will return," not that "Iron Man will return." Not sure if there's anything to be read into that.

After that tag on the end I wish even more that we could get another Hulk movie. Please Marvel, I'll beg!

I think that they will have stark return, but more in an "advisory" role as seen in the comics, much how Nick Fury told him that he would be a "consultant" for the Avengers. Remember, Stark's home is destroyed, but he still has Stark Tower in New York, which I feel will be the new "HQ" for stark and the Avengers.

I'm also a bit peeved that I didn't see iron man flying over Biscayne Bay ;)

I left disappointed. I feel like they cut so many corners.

Mandarin has 10 magic rings? .....we'll make him Trevor.
Tony's got a bunch of suits? .....we'll throw them all in real quick at the end.
Robert Downey Jr might retire? .....we'll let him borrow Selina Kyle's jump drive.

It would have been nice to see a single specialized armor do a specialized task. I was identifying armors based on the toys/mobile game, not based on anything on-screen. The gemini armor is for space travel? The red snapper is for disaster relief? Not that I saw. I'm not saying we need to see every armor in every situation. But one? One would have been nice. And no, I will not count Igor becoming a walking car jack. :rolleyes

Really my biggest disappointment was the fact that the only thing I really wanted to see was left out. How hard would it have been to turn the lights on in the Armory/Vault/Basement???? It was a huge tease, and even bigger let down. The closest we get is seeing the wine cellar just above it. There could have been a reveal of all of the armors in storage and instead we get a shot of 40 arc reactors lighting up in a blackout. It just seems lazy.

Saw it last night, and I absolutely loved it. Sure, I could sit here and nit-pick about certain things, but all in all, I had a blast in the theater. The movie was well written, exciting, fun, and AWESOME. I plan on seeing it a second time while it's still in the cinemas.

Mandarin has 10 magic rings. .. this would suck
Tonys got a bunch of suits? They werent all just in real quick. The whole scence was quite lengthy. What you want? A full hour section devoted to no story? He spent around 10 to 15 mins just swapping in 3 or 4 suits. Thats like an eigth of the whole film!
Downey might retire? Whats this got to do with the film Or cutting corners?

Gemini? Has space boosters
Shotgun armor? Used its signature arm rigs.
Or do you mean doing what theyre designed for? I guess thats what you ment as non of them did anything super special that any other suit could have done.

Your biggest let down? Not mine but I did nod my head while reading this. Made worse by toys r us having a mini display at the fayre. I figured it was designed from the film so thought we would get to see it.

Finally saw it last night and now I can go re-join the post-release thread.

I give it a 8/10, good movie on its own but I enjoyed Avengers much more. The plot twists didn't bother me one bit, though the Mandarin one I obviously prepared myself before going in to see it but I guess I wasn't that emotionally attached to the OG comic book Mandarin. Action scenes were far better than any previous Marvel movie with Iron Man, the only things I didn't like was the Stark infiltration scene into the Mandarin's mansion and I thought the army of suits could've gotten a bit more screen time to showcase their unique abilities, but I got over those pretty quickly. All the humor didn't bother me either, I felt that was a pretty natural progression from how they handled the humor in IM, IM2, and Avengers. Pacing was great, maybe about 3/4 of the way in there was a short slow stretch but that was about it.

RDJ really made the movie on his own, I felt like a lot of the supporting case (including Pepper and Rhodey) were just backdrops, and I actually wanted to see more of Rhodes in action :( I didn't care much for Guy Pearce but James Badge Dale was pretty badass. Kingsley was great - even if you didn't care for how they handled the Mandarin, he executed that transformation brilliantly and was pure comical as Trevor. Maya was basically a throwaway character, they could've re-told the story w/o her and not missed a beat, I guess leaving her in was more to keep in line with the Extremis comic story. Lastly, I was not all that impressed with Ty Simpkins, I actually thought RDJ carried all those scenes on his own, the only exception where I felt Ty stood out was when he was playing the cute card to get in Stark's car.

I give a lot of credit for Marvel pushing the CBM genre here beyond the standard superhero plot. And while I normally don't like to make comparisons, it's hard to ignore DKR in that respect - both movies are threequels, both pushed the genre envelope, and both put a lot of emphasis on their lead characters w/o the masks, but I came out of IM3 enjoying it much more than DKR, that's all I'm going to say on that matter especially after making my anti-fanboy opinions very public in the DKR vs Avengers thread ;) I will agree that these films show that CBMs are maturing and the general audience (given the international box office results) is willing to accept their superheroes in a pseudo-superhero film.

Ultimately, I'm still partial to the traditional superhero mythology, which is why I'm putting IM3 third on my Marvel Studio list behind Avengers and IM1, but I still liked it and I'll probably see it again.

SOME POTENTIAL SPOILERS IN MY POST (I try to be not too specific to avoid completely spoiling)

I'm still processing the movie. I didn't leave hating the film, nor did I leave jumping for joy. There was some things I wasn't expecting. I'm not sure if I dug the whole thing with Pepper near the end. I have to tell myself I'm watching a fictitious movie to begin with, but it was a bit hard dealing with the extremis technology because I can process a dude wearing a technologically advanced suit of armor and weaponry just fine, but to see what human modification could be made seemed a real stretch beyond an alternate reality.

I was bummed that Ben Kingsley wasn't fully utilized as he was portrayed to be in the trailers. I really was convinced he was going to be the head baddie and that Stark would be dealing with him.

Still processing and stewing though, which isn't always a great sign...

I would have liked to have seen a single specialized armor stand out. They were all built for individual purposes, yet they all played the same role. They were painfully generic.

Don't believe me? You even mixed them up. The Shotgun armor doesn't have arm rigs. The one you are talking about is the Mark 25 "Striker". Not trying to be a *****, I wasn't sure either. I just had to load up the mobile game and look it up, which is my point. Everything we learned about the various armors came off screen. Hot Toys promo photos showed us more of the Red Snapper than the movie. And that bummed me out.

I took a day off of work for this ?....I'd rather see fantastic four again...I'm not gonna repeat everything that keeps getting mentioned in every above posts---All I know is once I seen tony's boot flying across country by itself --I knew they had gone to far....
(to many tricks trying to out-do avengers )....tony was great as always though!

Dont forget they wernt a main part of this film. They were built before it. Not exactly a main story arc. They still had decent screentime as a hole. And wernt built for a purpose for the film. The only one that was you saw plenty of the specialised feature.

I know your not and its fine but the point doesnt stand as you and anyone else reading can probably tell it was me mixing the names up. Nothing to do with them all looking the same. I described the correct armor just gave it the wrong name. Thats probably the main armour you wouldnt mix up with all the rest. If it was a mistake on them being generic then I would have described the wrong armor fr9m the wrong bit of the scene. Mor an error on my knowledge of the names.

Honestly it's a great movie. It kept me entertained and was paced fairly well (with the exception of the beginning) but definitely falls short of the first movie.

I did enjoy seeing more of the man than the suit as it made the moments of Iron Man awesome!

Here's what worked for me:
1. The final boss wasn't another suit of armor
2. The writing of all the characters seemed to work well - I will be honest, Cheadle is a much better fit as Rhodes than Howard. The fire breathing response is what did it for me
3. The use of Pepper - She wasn't just a pretty face to look at this go
4. Tony always seemed to be outmatched and had to figure it out. It makes the audience think that he could actually lose
5. More than a suit of armor - I felt that much more care went into the character developing arc of Tony. I wasn't always looking for the next CG Porn extravaganza
6. The logic of Killian- That was a pretty good idea. They had to add the line about plastic surgery for the Mandarin cause we all know that facial recognition software would have snagged him off of his Facebook page.
7. The Post Avengers Treatment - It wasn't over bearing and it was a nice touch to connect the movies together

Here's what I hated:

1. Lack of AC/DC - Nuff said
2. War Machine/ Iron Patriot didn't do anything! - While Rhodes himself was fun to see on screen, the IP was a worthless redesign. He was basically Wedge Antilles in ANH
3. The use of Pepper - While I liked the first scene when she saved Tony, I don't think that she should have finished off the main baddie. I think she should have somehow weakened him, then Tony calls on the MK42 and levels him. The main hero gets to use what he's created to destroy his nemesis. It would have completed a much cleaner circle. I know it's a thematic element to having her no longer being protected by Tony, but it cheapened it (for me).

Definitely worth seeing. My ranking is 1,3,2

Why does everyone feel as though Iron Man needs AC/DC music? I never understood that... I was glad there wasnt any.

So was Killian funding the Ten Rings way back then as part of a long con in his endgame? Was he thus party in some capacity to Tony's capture?

My take is that Killian simply used the Ten Rings logo for his smokescreen operation, and the real Ten Rings is still out there, presumably hiding. If we take the IM3 comic prelude as canon, Rhodey was out hunting the Ten Rings during the events of Avengers. I'm guessing he could've been hunting the real Ten Rings cells around the world.

I'm also biased because I want to believe the real Ten Rings and a real Mandarin is still out there somewhere. Tony going toe to toe with the head of the group that kidnapped him in the first movie, now THAT'S bringing things full circle.

RDJ will be back, at least for Avengers 2... I feel pretty confident about that.

To the people saying that IM2 was the worst film, can you articulate why exactly? I find it weaker than IM1, sure, but it is by no stretch a bad movie.

Haha well if anything, how come there wasnt any Black Sabbath? They actually did the Iron Man song. Gotcha.

I was actually a little more disheartened from that fact. I do wish that for the trailer it wasn't shown as if this is to be Iron Man Rises. The general tone of the movie is much akin to the others.

Its not that I think its a terrible film. More just not as good. Although I didnt find it much better then ok. Rubbish bad guy. And two rubbish fight scenes woth him. The best fight scene was with the droids. The final one was basically
the iron monger mk 2 who hammerd them both for 2 mins then they blew him to smitherines. I found the story quite engaging with tony fighting demons. But it was a poor attempt at a bad guy who was like the first films bad guys little brother. I liked almost all the other stuff and thought the into was killer also. Favreau even sounds disheartened and mentions the rushed film in the commentry. In not so many words but its easy to tell. Mentioned how he was running out of time etc...

From the fact that there was no black sabbath? Dont think the songs in any of the films....

It's in the credits of the first movie. It's just a nice little touch as it looks to be the "end" of the Iron Man/ Tony Stark character arc.
