Seriously amazing (and QUICK) work.

I hope the final thing has drool proof paint on it, because something tells me it will be necessary if I ever get near one.

Thanks Nick. :) Hope to be done and ready to upload for print within the week.

Re: Iron Man Mark VIII helemt 3D print WIP

Cost isn't necessarily an issue, especially if you're just looking for a display piece or just printing the helmet, but if it's part a full suit, 3D printed, the total cost would be what ? around 10000$ ? I can't imagine putting that much money in a suit... It's a shame 3D printing is still so expensive !
I'm still looking forward to see the result, I'm sure it will be awesome !

Re: Iron Man Mark VIII helemt 3D print WIP

If you own a 3D printer the actual cost of the material may not be too bad. For the printers that extrude a filament of plastic it's around $40/Kg:

MakerBot TV S02E07 - How Much Plastic? - YouTube

Obviously you need one that prints the pieces big enough, but there are some hobby style ones around similar to the Makerbot where you can extend the axis, otherwise you'd have to make all of it in small pieces and stick them together, or design the pieces so they interlock:

Printing Large Objects on 3D Printer without Warping - YouTube (about 1:40 onward)

Getting someone else to print it commercially though is going to be costly, and other types of 3D printing are more expensive depending on the material they use...

Re: Iron Man Mark VIII helemt 3D print WIP

Any kind of 3D printer that you can currently buy as a hobbiest would be sub par IMO. The resolution is not anywhere near what you would need to make these pieces properly. The printers that use extruded plastics do not have the resotution at .2 mm. An OBJET with the resoution and proformance one would need to compare to Shapeways for example would be in the $270,000 range last I heard from a guy that was deciding btween that and a 5 axis cnc mill which would cost less than half that.

Regardless this thread isn't about how much money or time I'm going to sink into this but the end product and the work being produced no matter the way we get there. So back on topic. :)

Re: Iron Man Mark VIII helemt 3D print Model complete

And a few pics of the completed model. Just need to finish up a few detials on the inside mating edges etc and send it in to get printed. :)
INT thread will be up in the JY shortly.

Re: Iron Man 3 Mark VIII helemt 3D print Model complete

will there possibly be a pep file for this?

Re: Iron Man 3 Mark VIII helemt 3D print Model complete

excellent, this will look great, i take it you wont be using the colours from the movie! lol mustard is not a good look for it (im sure once the film goes into post some things will change) :rolleyes

Re: Iron Man 3 Mark VIII helemt 3D print Model complete

It's not Mustard lol, it's very much Gold, The lighting on set and pre production will make sure the correct colours come through but here's a pic to show it's clearly gold, just more of it than in the previous versions.

There's plenty of images all over to show it's clearly gold.

Re: Iron Man 3 Mark VIII helemt 3D print Model complete

Ther is already a pep file out there, not sure where it's posted. This will not be done for pep though it is being done for a 3D print.

You mena for my personal helmet? I dunno I do not currently own any IronMan helmets so It'll be whatever I choose at the time I acctually have one for myself. ;)

hmm ok, i was hoping for a pep :/ oh well, ive got the one thats out there, its just that its not totally accurate.

Re: Iron Man 3 Mark VIII helemt 3D print Model complete

This looks amazing!! I tried posting in the junkyard thread to indicate interest, but unfortunately I do not have permission yet to post there. I sent a direct message, so hopefully I can get in on the run!

Just out of curiosity, are you printing this via Shapeways or through a personally owned 3D printer?

You're never going to get total accuracy from Pep. It breaks curves into facets. And more facets you have, the more accurate it is, but the harder it is to pep, thus introducing a larger risk of human error...which makes it inaccurate.

Something as detailed as this model could never be pepped. Your fingers would fall off before you got halfway done. 3D Printing is the best method for bringing this into the real world and doing it justice.

Since all peps are technically inaccurate, it's down to the smoothing stage to make them accurate. You can do that just as easily with the current pep model out there! Seriously, check out some Halo builds. Some guys have make some incredibly detailed helmets from the low def models simply by taking the time to smooth and shape it properly.

...Plus not every file needs to be released for pep.

yeah i get that it wont be totally accurate, i suppose i can try carve out those tiny details in the end. im new to all this building stuff, i only discovered pepping about a month ago haha. 3d printing is a bit pricey for me so ill stick to pepping for now :unsure but thanks, ill still have to put the pep together first before i can do anything lol.

oh btw, got any tips for the gluing and stuff? i used a glue gun for my first pep and it was too messy and thick, there was a thick layer of glue between the pieces. i read to use pva so ill give that a go. but just wondering if theres any tips anyone could give me, would be alot of help :)

Re: Iron Man 3 Mark VIII helemt 3D print Model complete

The biggest tip for pepping I would say is to read through the pepakura sticky at the top of this forum :thumbsup
