Immortan Joe Progress Log - 3d Models, W.I.P. photos, and Con Results!

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - 3d Modelling and various other bits.

What speed are you printing at? Also what are your extrusion and retraction rates? If I had to guess, you're getting poor layer adhesion because you're moving too fast or because the layer doesn't have time to cool. For these tiny prints, I set my perimeter speed at 25mm/sec.

And unless the manufacturer says 235c, you might also want to try dropping the extruder temp down to 230. I know it' only 5c, but that'll shorten the cooling time.

Well the more I read you guys talking about a 3-D printer the more overwhelming it seems lol

It's really not too bad. It's just like any other hobby. Make some mistakes in the beginning, learn more about the craft and your tools, and then it's second nature. I'd be happy to help you out if you have any questions.

Thanks to Ein and his tip about repairing the model via this website:

They printed great with no change in settings:

Thanks, Ein!

That ring is super cool. :D Is that the gold steel finish? What a good print.

I finished what I think are all of the top bars for the medals.

Adding 'em to the OP now.

Amazing work, as always! I'm getting ready to make a big purchase from Shapeways, we're you by chance planning on uploading all three of the top bars you created? As of now it seems that two of them are uploaded and available. We're you planning on making your castlenuts available on Shapeways as well?

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - 3d Modelling and various other bits.

Thank you for reminding me - the top bar uploads kept timing out so I gave up on it to return again later. Should be visible now. I have a mostly-modelled keyhole badge but I haven't finished it well enough to put up there yet, too.

Edit: Added the castle nuts, too, though I have since noticed that there are even more than just 3 sizes - you can basically mix regular nuts in on the fringes, though.

no worries whatsoever! thanks so much for uploading that third top bar!

Amazing!!! By chance have you or anyone else on here done or plan on doing the Navy Badge because that thing is like $15 by itself not including shipping and handling

I'd like to do one just so I have a full set of modelled badges, but truthfully that's a comparable cost to what it'd be on Shapeways, if not a little cheaper. :p

Ouch I just can't seem to justify that i'm running low on my costume budget as it is. Well better check my local military surplus stores

Immortan Joe Progress Log - 3d Modelling and various other bits.

Buy one, make an aluminum foil rubbing of it (like you did with quarters as a kid), turn the delicate empty foil shell over and fill the back with hot glue, return the original. Paint the gold parts gold. Done!

Final version has been cleaned up and added to the OP. Additional link here. Should be scaled right!

I had some spare liquid plastic while casting the skull for the belt and made another cast of the naval badge. I could get it UPS'd to you if you want, just cover shipping. PM me if you're interested.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - 3d Modelling and various other bits.

Been able to get a lot done in the last few days, but I have to catch up photographing things.

Torso armor's underway properly now! I used a headlight polishing kit to slightly frost the PETG I had heat-formed because it needed a bit of definition behind the armor. Only scuffed up the back side so that the outer shell was still glossy.

PETG is definitely the way to go with this. Transparent worbla has no structural strength to it - this stands up on its own. It feels satisfying and you could probably hit me with a baseball bat and not crack it. Not that you should.

I riveted the top and bottom halves together with an overlap comparable to what I saw on Joe. Haven't finished shaping the shoulders with the heatgun yet but that shouldn't be too tricky.

I will trim a bit off the bottom of the gutplate to make it more accurate to Joe's, and of course it needs the yellow/orange/umber staining to exaggerate the musculature.

I will buy some suede tomorrow and hopefully figure out how to trim the armor to my satisfaction. It's not perfectly accurate by any means, but I think it gets the gist of Joe across pretty well.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - 3d Modelling and various other bits.

Torso armor: Now twice as fun with a backplate! My girlfriend (who, by the way, is largely responsible for making the keyhole model in Z-brush above -thanks honey :3) took the back of the roman armor and some Apoxie Sculpt and added some extra bits so that we had something to form Joe's weird back musculature over.

As before, this stuff is pretty hard to photograph, but I'm quite happy with it so far. Gotta trim it and frost it like we did with the front plate. For now, though, I'm going to try and source some suede for the trim on the front!

Hello there Joes! Been lurking for a while, but about ready to begin my own Joe build. As far as the torso armor lining, I suggest looking at taupe pigskin suede.
