I'm a Bro and I Sew... Who else is with me?

Glad this old thread is still kicking! And I can't agree more with what SMP said. My main machine is a mechanical Bernina 1008 and it does garment weight leather just fine. Anything more and I need to get on an industrial with a teflon foot. If it's fairly thick, or many layers of anything heavier, I opt for the industrial walking foot. It just depends on what you want to work with.

Right on! It also depends on the quality of the leather. Since it's natural hide, not manufactured, there are going to be thickness variances in a single piece regardless of the oz. A walking foot can help if you get a really weird piece that's "lumpy".

My girlfriend is teaching me how to sew so it's nice to be able to post here! now i just need to get my mum old sewing machine fixed and I'll be able to start practising in my own time!

I find that my sewing skills has definitely helped me with pattern making and armor design. I've used it from knitting chainmail to making plate armor.
Here is myself in my 1350s English conscript armor (100 year war era)

I confess, I'm a bro that can sew. I've been sewing since I was 13, I'm now 45. I usually hand sew, but I do have a machine, a 46 year old Singer that my mum bought new in 1968. Anyways, I've done quite a few costumes, replica military uniforms, and doll clothes for my niece and girlfriend.

I'm dead set on a Dash Rendar costume to wear at WonderCon, and looking at the concept art and the toy on my desk, it just seemed like a no brainer to cut out the parts of a store bought jump suit that aren't the right material (in this case, brown quilted broad cloth), use those parts as templates for the new fabric, and then sew the new stuff back in to the holes I made in the jump suit.

Is it considered cheating if my first project is basically seam-ripping and cutting out parts of a jumpsuit and sewing those parts back in with different material?
:ninja

Just got my wife a computerised embroidery machine and a sewing machine got Christmas.
I've been trying the digitising software and testing them on the machine.
Quite good fun and some challenges, but not tried sewing yet lol.

Here's a wee trial one I did ... It's not perfect. ( due to the fabric I used) but I'll get better.

I am a bro and newish to RPF and was informed about this thread from a friend in the 501st. I was taught be my grandmother when I was very young and continued to do it throughout my early teens. I stopped in my mid teens and have now only recently started back up since getting some hobbies that are cooler if I can sew stuff myself (in my opinion). LARPing and cosplaying. I'm glad there is this topic on here with this many people in it. Hope to share lots of experiences and ideas with you guys.

I wish i could sow, im going to need to learn how to pretty quick if im going to pull off my Robin Cosplay. Or i could just ask my mum like the old days? hahaha She used to make me capes and masks all the time when i was younger.

Nope, what ever make it look good. My costumes looks like hell on the inside, but as just the outside is shown and looks good i don't care.

I've been watching that- it looks like it is going to be a great costume, Sulla.

Thanks. Got a little more done with it: Sleeves on, shoulder pads in, back spandex panel in. I need to close up the sides and inseam then do the elastic bits and cuffs. I am working on a little something for the communicator too...

That little face is the tag I sew into all my creations.

No time like the present to start. :) Got a Jo-Ann's or some other fabric/sewing store near by? They often have classes, and sell refurbished machines.

I'd need to buy a sewing machine and serger and take classes yeah. The only material I'd sew would be Lycra. I plan to make a couple more Spider-Man suits before next February. Maybe I'll do the sewing myself, we'll see

Yup I joined a home-ec class in high school to meet girls and blow off time, but I've been sewing ever since.. Usually halloween costumes and misc items around the house!

I'm getting ready to tackle a monster maroon from Wrath of Khan. I've actually done one of these before with a poor pattern and crappy fabric. Hope to make a much better go at it this time around.

Dave :)

I keep wanting to start and other things get in my way. I would totally wear a Starfleet uniform every day of the week if I could.

More of my Trek progress.

Star Trek Mug Shot

The shirt is just a test shirt made from cotton jersey. The neck is already pulling out of shape a little. The jumper still needs cuffs done, hook & eye at the zipper top, side elastic, inner front elastic belt, and boot straps.

This was a test fit for the shoulders, collar, and sleeves.
