Ideas on casting a foam prop?

I have screen used Starship Trooeprs Grenades, and would like to make some cast copies. How would I go about casting these foam items, they are pretty fragile and I certainly don't want to mess them up.

I would make a clay copy to cast but honestly, I am jsut not that artistically skilled....a lot of you folks are truely gifted with your talents.

anyway thanks for any help!

Ah crap I postted in wrong forum, mods would you move please.

I would reccomend Rebound25 mold rubber in a one piece mold.. You can litterally just paint the mold rubber around it, or do a cavity pour, make a slit, and then pull the original out... The rubber will stretch enough for ya.

using rebound25 do I have to coat the original though? This foam is 12+ years old now and I don't want to jack up the originals becasue they are screen used.

You can give them to me and then you don't have to worry about it..... Ha Yeah right:lol!

Joking aside, it would help if you could post some pics so I can see how porous they are. Rebound-25 works great and yes you would have to let the silicone touch it.

sure thing, will post up when I get home tongiht with some close ups.

I want to do this exact procedure with a foam mask, but i've been told the original would be destroyed as the silicone bonds with the foam.

That foam is very porous... and at 14-years my foamies are starting to get tired. I have a set of film used rubber-skinned grenades (A-Grade, with spoons molded in, just like the foamies, but with a dense coating like the stunt Moritas) and a set of resin Hero grenades (sans spoons). Thought about doing them up, but to do that with a movie prop, would destroy the intrinsic value of it. :confused The molding process would "clean" every trace of dirt/bug blood, etc. right off it. I just can't see molding something the squishy yielding a usable pull.

Yeah thats what I was thinking but I don't have the clay skills to make one to mold, I am thinking I may jsut have to figger out a way.

Just a thought, you can seal it with a micro-thin layer of clear silicone. Such as Physco-Paint thinned down and airbrushed on, When you go to mold it you just need to add a silicone release so the mold won't stuck.

Another tip for foam casting... Smooth-on has a wax based mold release designed specifically for foams....standard mold releases have an anti-foaming agent built in to stop urethane from foaming and can mess with the "rise" of the foam.

Check with Smooth-on's teck line for the proper ordering number.

awesome tips, thank you all!

Heres the pics of the grenades close up.
