Human Huntress - wip

I have also added a full set of foam pepakura files in my pep post, and yes, the floor mats are probably the best. You can find them on Ebay too they come in packs of 4 usually sometimes 6 and are rougly 600mm x 600mm x 8mm A little tip though never use the "jigsaw" pattern to connect two sheets together. Something I discovered when doing my space marine armour. The pattern will show through any filler and painting you do unless you are willing to spend a lot of time fixing it up... It's just not worth it. The 2mm foam is good for skinning and decoration. But not really much else.

For the filler you want to use an acrylic sealant. It has to be acrylic cause the silicone sealant will peel away from the foam Another lesson I learned making my space marine armour... It can be really disconcerting to do an entire piece only for all the silicone to just fly off when you sand it down.

thanks guys... meanwhile, been playing around with fimo modelling clay and have had a go at the blade for my dagger. I based it roughly on some pics I found in the gallery here so thank you to whoever posted them. Its cooking in the oven at the moment and if if comes out fairly ok, I will try moulding it and then make the handle for it. the lighting bolt symbol is the symbol of the clan, the rest of the symbols are invented.. probably with some Vulcan influence, lol.

aaaargh, why does liquid latex take soooooo long to dry? Bored now and want to get on with the next stage. Excuse me while I go and poke it again....
Nope, not dry yet...
Does the whole "two part mould" thing even work with latex? Or will it all fuse together when the second half is poured? I suspect I will find out tomorrow. (yes, I know, I should have bought silicon) and I really must remember to put in a hole to pour the resin in otherwise I will be in trouble. I remembered to put keys in and I remember reading something about pry points which makes a lot of sense. I wonder if a bit of vaseline between the layers will help?
*pokes it again* Nope... its still not dry...

I don't think you can make a 2 part latex mold, since it would only create a "seam" like a latex mask if you poured more on the other side.

I'm with xdmray - What are you molding ? We could be of more help if we knew the application and had some pics.

I think she's moulding the knife blade that she modelled out of Fimo?

[The knife is] cooking in the oven at the moment and if if comes out fairly ok, I will try moulding it and then make the handle for it.

Also, Kehlan, that doesn't look like the right kind of foam - it says PVC foam rather than EVA, and the description says that it's a 'Hard, flat rigid sheet', and you want flexible, rather than rigid foam. To me, that looks like the kind of mountboard that you find at art shops.

Ideally you're looking for EVA, plastazote or possibly PE foam.

sorry, should have been more clear. The knife blade will be made from resin and yes, that's what I am moulding. I might try putting a layer of tinfoil down to separate the layers (since Ive started theres nothing to lose by trying it before spending more money) I posted a pic of the the plastecine version, will post more when and if it comes out the mould ok.

the foamex question was for something else. I'm looking at foam for the shoulder bells and the various armoured bits (front, back and thigh) that hang from the belt. Ive seen posts talking about sintra and foamex but since I have been stung before on ebay by sellers using the wrong names for stuff (the fimo I bought, well lets just say I'm convinced its cheap plastecine, not fimo as it turned up in generic packaging and burned in the oven which fimo doesn't do. - that poor minion got completely cremated) so just wondered if the stuff in that auction actually is the same foamex I see people talking about.

Oh right, yes, that looks like Foamex/Sintra - which I think can be formed by heating. But it's not something I've ever worked with, so can't help you much further than that!

Arktic, I didn't see your comment about it being rigid when I replied (it didnt show for some reason.) rigid in theory at least, provided it becomes flexible when heated, could be a good thing because when it cools again it should hold its shape. I have no idea, never done any of this before, I really am completely new to it. I was just going by the comments in Vinman's avp templates thread where they talk about using foamex or sintra.

I suppose I have nothing to lose by trying it.. if its the wrong stuff it will just sit clogging up my craft room until I find a use for it somewhere down the line. will probably take a risk and try the 3mm although I know that's quite thin and I will probably regret it, as people have recommended thicker stuff... but I am not the slimmest girl to start with and by the time you've got several layers, it adds up to a piece of armour that is quite thick and I don't want to end up looking as round as a teletubby, lol.

If your making a 2 piece latex mold you will most likely need a hard outside shell to hold the latex in shape. You can use vaseleen between the 2 latex halves so they do not become one. You will need to make the hard shell while the part is still in the latex mold to retain the shape. This is exactly what I did to create a latex mold for my blade gauntlet. I did not pour the latex I brushed on several layers. If you pour on a really thick layer like you would do with silicon it will take a LONG time to harden.

Hope this helps.
