Human Hair Wigs

Anyone have any experience with human hair wigs? There is one that is on discount, but it not the color I want.

This may be a really stupid question, but can you dye them as easily as regular human hair or are they treated some how?

I hope that makes sense....

You can dye them with hair dye. I recommend not leaving the dye in as long as you would with the hair on your head. Just be gentle with it. And rinse it well. When you wash it, use a mixture of warm water and a 2-in-one (Shampoo/conditioner). Gently work it through the hair and rinse with warm water. Gently blot dry with towel and when you comb it out comb the wet hair from the bottom to the top using gentle downward strokes one section at a time. Never begin combing at the top or middle and always comb down.

I read somewhere once that you can also put them in a lingerie bag and run them through the wash with RIT dye. This seems like it would turn your wig into a matted mess though.

I generally try to con a friend into doing hair for me as I despise it so.

I was able to dye one using regular hair dye. If you can, I would try to do it on a head form to keep it in shape and to reduce the tangeling. I just stuck it in the tub and used a shower sprayer to rinse it, if you have a sperayer in the kitchen sink, that would probably work too.

You can cut & style any wig to be honest.

Why not talk to a hair dresser about this first however since they would be the most knowledgable in the subject of working with human hair.

Yes. If you know a hairstylist. Just see if you can put the wig on and get them to cut it and style it for you. Or if you don't know one... I've called a local salon before and opened with "this may sound like a weird question, but..."

What are you trying to make Tony??? Or is it top secret at this point?

At 5'5" - I think I will make a perfect hobbit. :) While Merry isn't my favorite of the four hobbits, I think I look more like him than any other.

I am trying to make this for Dragon*Con [2009]....so I can spread the payments out as much as possible. I am on a tight budget....which is one reason I need to learn how to use that stupid sewing machine of mine... I hate that thing!
