I am busy making a plastic replica gun and wish to know how to achieve the effect of gun bluing on metallic plastic. I was hoping to use a paint technique. The best I have achieved so far is mat black spry paint, lightly sanded (for aging) with clear coating, but the result is too black for my liking.

You could try the old standby of powdering some graphite from a pencil and rubbing that into the surface and then clear-coating.

Here are two suggestions: alclad paint has a paint that is supposed to be blued steel, if you can find it try it. Next suggestion is to spray irridedesnt blue pearl over satin black. Don't need a lot, just enough to give a hint of blue.
