Hello. Just wondering if anyone had a way to make a real working calling farnsworth from warehouse 13? Spaceing is not a big issue because worst comes to worst I can get a bigger tin for the device.:D

Make calls how?

...Seriously...how do you actually intend on making calls on it? Like, voice only, hold it up to your ear, or full on video calling like in the show.

Either way, you're going to end up either spending hundreds/thousands on electronics, or dangerously modify an existing cell phone.

On paper it doesn't actually take a lot of electonic know how so much as programming. I was thinking about this a while back. In theory all it would take is a smart phone case made to look like as much like a farnsworth as you can manage with the base phone and then a video chat app that puts the in coming video into a circle below the glass lense of the farnsworth case.

Dificult yes but I don't think impossible. To be honest I don't know why there isn't a video application for calls like that. There is one that gives vide of calls from the tv show but not actual video chat from your phone, sckype, or what have you.

Looks like a 6 inch smart phone should about do it.

There are always short cuts as well. You could have the app just show all the dials and what not on the screen instead of making bits and bobs for the case and lense. The only trade off that may be required is the metal case. It may interfere with the antenna and may need to be plastic.

working as in actually able to video call someone?

They already have them...they are called iPhones.

OK so here are several issues you need to solve...

1) You need connectivity so that Farnsworth A can connect to Farnswroth B. That means WIFI or Cell service. If it's cell, you might as well just put an iPhone inside a Farnsworth case and use Facetime, but I'm assuming that's not what you want to do.

2) You need a screen. You will not find a round screen device, but you can get flat LCD-types. They will have to be fairly big in order to cover the whole circle.

3) You need a way for each Farnsworth to identify each other so you know who to connect with and what their address is, whether phone number or internet address.

4) You need a little camera - easy enough to get.

5) You need a protocol for sending two way video and audio. You do not want to try and make this yourself.

6) You need two of them so you're not talking to yourself :)

I'd personally look into how I could make a miniature Skype platform, and just utilize it. You do so not want to reinvent the wheel of video conferencing, but rather leverage something that already exists.

As to Raspberry pie? Sure maybe - can you run Skype on it and run a low power large flat screen? Then maybe you got something if you're willing to work at it.
