how the others see you

I thought to make this thread to to know how your hobby looks through the others eyes!
personally I look like a fool to others( because I have 35 years, maybe) but I don't care!
a few people understand how it is to have a pasion and many looks cautious when it comes about something else but the life's routine!

I'm glad I am not old enough yet !

This cthread is for those over 20 years!

Ha ha, I think this is a good thread. Everyone thinks its mental except my mum who loves the pred and loves to see what I have bought/made etc. All my friends think the work everyone does on here is superb and love my new mask but think I have way to much disposable income. I show people this site all the time and all the new sculpts. The GF however hates it, thinks the pred is ugly and is scared of the mask and will kill me if she finds out it has cost me close to £500 to complete it (She thinks its only cost me £100 in total - sheesh thats real value for money )..........

I forgot to mentioned this thing neither my wife doesn't knows how much cost include my hobby!the costs are always bigger than she knows!

My wife have no interest in my hobby, often a tough critic of my work saying things like "its not symmetrical " and often think I sell my art/Bio's way too cheap.
My mother often say my art is ugly and can't believe people will pay money for it so she says "well as long as u make some money,
keep making ugly but if it fails start to paint flowers and ***** portraits"

I am now 33 and trying to be a Concept Artist for Games/movies ~ formerly Designer in Advertising. Wish me luck.

Good luck Uratz, do you have any links for ur concept art stuff? Would be interesting to see.

Does everyone lie to there other half on the true cost???? (Maybe they lie to us about the cost of shoes and handbags??????)

LOL......yes this is a good thread.......only the other week a freind of a freind said to me "how sad" when we were talking about hobbies and such.....refering to me saying that when I was a teenager I was into modeling and sculpting............my reply was......"well thats f*cking rich coming from someone who's 48 years old and spends EVERY weekend dressing up like GI joe playing toy feking soldiers"........you see....he is an airsofter.
Airsofting is not my cup of tea......but if thats what they choose to do.......thats up to them....I would never dream of calling someone "sad" because their hobbies differ from mine.......each to their own I say......and if people think its sad or whatever.......**** em......thats THEIR problem....NOT mine.
truth is....there are a HELL of alot of people in this world who just cant seem to grasp the concept of personal choice and freedom to spend our spare time doing something we enjoy........rather than the excepted norm.

oh.......and best of luck with your persued career Mike

edit.......i'll be 39 this year BTW

I'm in the same boat. 34 y/o Maritime Engineer, trying to make use of my electrical skills while I'm off the ship. Not really looking for serious work, just a hobby to keep my mind occupied, maybe pick up a few extra $$$ from custom tech pieces.

Best of luck with the new endeavour!

Just had a quick look at your blog, great work Have you ever fancied doing a guyver sculpt? (Im dying for someone on here to do one!!!)

I'm an avid 501st costumer and have heard every lame ass comment out there from people who just don't "GET IT", they don't realize that costuming is a creative outlet and form of escapism from the drudgery of day to day life. I don't know what I would do without my hobbies! Those people who think it's childish to "dress up" are way too judgemental and when I tell them how rewarding it is to see a childs eyes light up when they see their iconic figure from the movies before them, some get it ,some don't but they are the ones with "issues", take the pole out of your ass and stop taking life so seriously....you might even have some fun.

I will continue to do what I do as a hobby, it brings me great joy and others too. The rest can.....well you know

I'm 42 and my wife supports my crazy little hobby, she knows about "most" of the costs

Everyone knows how much this cost's me, My GF supports me 100% and so do my parents!

You see I know and so do my Friends & Family that I'm insane so it's all so normal...

Oh I will be 31 in April.

Well said.

This is really a good thread

In this small country you don't find geeks like us. I think you can count the people with a pred suit on one hand here. So all our friends and family say this is really a nice hobby.

They show a lot of interest in how we make suits. Even in the association where we are members of we get many question and we have to give a lot of advice to people who want to create fantasy suits in latex.

That's because not many people are familiar with making props and people dressed up like movie creatures. So everytime we get out in our suits we feel a little like rock stars

I'm family and friends think im nuts.... they get a kick outta my costuming obesssion... but they dont get why i lik the pred... Sam, Julie... u know why....

35 going on 15 with this stuff. I point blank refuse to grow up, i mean would a sane grown man climb on his roof in winter just to get a cool (ish) photo?

Do i care what people think of me doing this? NO , never have , never will.

DIGAF

Do I Give A **** !!!

Wife knows the costs of this as we have no secrets, shes fully supportive of me , but she always has been in whatever i do, kids think its cool and my mom is always taking photos of my work to show friends hehe, i have NO other family for opinions.

People i work with think im alittle bit nuts, and the stuff i create they like, and thats fine with me, and if they think any different ,see DIGAF.

Really wish id discoverd sculpting at 12 instead of 32, as id have loved to maybe do this part time or full time for a living, sadly at 35 its too late i recon. cant afford to chase a dream when you have a family to support. BUT thats fine, im happy to do this as a hobby.

25, parents finally started accepting my fascination for creatures and effects around my 17th, tried to get my foot in a now closed education in Animatronics (it turned to 3d animation now) but flunked because of having too much predator-only or influenced material in my portfolio.

Need to pick up more drawing and designing with a purpose, and in the meanwhile stay in school for lawenforcement Might switch later on, but it all depends on what will happen.

Girlfriend accepts it to a degree, she likes my bio's/ is interested in them, and supports me in picking up stuff. But my toy collection and P1 1:1 is banned to the cellar LOL. Man, I want a bigger house and a personal room

Awesome Thread and great point. Just like Usurper said, I'm 34 going on 15 and loving every minute of being in costume. I am also in the 501st and have heard it all. Even had a lady walk right up to and and look me up and down, ask me my age and laught out loud. I then had to ask her why she was so interested in us then after she stood there checking us out for 15 minutes, to which she briskly walked away with a smile on her face. Didn't bother me none really, but I have fun with people like that.

MY better half is totally supportive of the hobby and joins in once in a while. Our little one, she thinks we are normal!LOL
At 15, I had no idea nor a way of doing such things, but I loved them then as much as I do now so its what I do and I go out of my way to make sure I
indulge as much as I can. It's as much a part of my everyday life as work and family!

Great thread impaiatu!

30 year old high school teacher and I started my costumer career in the Star Wars realm so I'm also a 501st member (Fett being my first SW costume). Since then I have been consumed by my two hobbies, costuming and music. Fortunately my wife is an avid costumer/star wars freak, I met her through my local 501st garrison. I actually proposed to her at an event we also had Boba and Stormtroopers at our wedding (if people said you're geeky  ) Personally, my family doesn't really care, most of my friends are costumers or would love to have some of the **** that I have. To tell you the truth, even if no one understood the fascination I wouldn't care. Between my Pred and my various SW costumes I have helped support countless charitable organizations, and helped raise who knows how much money for medical research etc. I see costuming as two fold awesomeness, 1) I get to dress like badass Iconic Figures I've always loved and 2) Most of the time I get to help out people/organizations. So if people want to sit on some kind of high horse and criticize, I just ask them what they have done lately to help out their fellow man/woman. At least I'm not spending the money on gambling or crack

Great thread! I am 43 years old and have been costuming in one form or another since I was 12 but didnt go full blown until I did my Vader and joined the 501st. I am very fortunate to have a wife that supports my interest. My kid used to give me weird looks until I put her in a borrowed set of Stormtrooper Armor and got her on stage with Weird Al! Now we are working on her own set.

Most of my friends are fellow costumers so I very rarely get anything negative but when I do, I just look at them and say, "Its like riding a Harley, If I had to explain, you wouldnt understand."
