Im looking to do some embossed armour details.

I have a lord of the rings pinball machine and im looking to add some mods to the frame of the glass.

I want to try it myself first before (probably) giving up and getting someone good to do it :lol

I have a dead table id practise on, so the table can stay safe.

I havent worked up a design but it would be vaguely in the style of this...

What would be the best material to for example build the dragon out of of?

How robust is that material?

The area will get touched from time to time. I`ll be avoiding heavily fondled areas.

ANy info apreciated!

:thumbsup

Unless you have access to a press embossing will be difficult. Best bet is to do an overlay and glue it down or learn/look up info on metal repousse/chasing which is an old decorative metal forming art usually done with copper and silver

Thanks Cheech

actually to be clear - im not looking to do this in metal - im thinking some sort of material thats glued on to the metal thats there already - then I paint to look like metal.

If I'm reading the thread to date correctly, you want to do an embossed EFFECT, not necessarily emboss the metal.

If you want to emboss some sheet metal tho, which would stand up to hand wear, you can draw your design backwards on the inside of the metal part, lay it on a sheet of lead ( I use a cookie sheet I filled with lead- weighs a ton, but is re-usable if I re-melt the lead), and use a hammer and punch to follow the lines of the design. The lead has enough give to allow you to "dent" your workpiece, yet still support anything not directly being hit from above. For really high relief art, this process can be reversed, by flipping the work over, but is difficult at best with anything that isn't already a flat sheet to start with. HTH!
