Hoth Leia Communicator Prop

I'm trying to update my master for a new mold.

Although there are now some great photos of the original from a recent museum tour, there are some details that fell off the original.

Any one have some good reference shots from the film of this prop?

Here's one I have:

Hey,

Either the US Magazine or maybe the Rolling Stone covers from the time of the release.

One of those has a great shot of that piece. IIRC.

I'm surprised this post is still around.
So it's the same story: I'm updating this prop and looking for some really good film stills or post-production photos of this prop because the "radio knobs" fell off the original, so the museum photos I have aren't completely accurate....and it looks like Hot Toys was faced with the same problem because I noticed that their latest Leia Hoth figure is missing the same details.

I paused through a Blu-ray of Empire Strikes back and came across a shot of Leia on the Falcon. I will try and get a screen shot at some point and post it. Here's a good example from a B&W still taken from a Hoth scene (hospital):

I discovered that the height of the knobs was the same as the height of conical, knurled knob found on the X-Wing Chest box.

So going back to the beginning, here was my latest version of the communicator:

When I originally put this together, I bypassed all of the work involved with taking apart a perfectly good tape measure by using the vacuum formed packaging it came in (see above).
Since I was going to go through the trouble of machining new "radio" knobs for an updated version, I decided really do it right and take apart my now older and slightly used tape measure, which I hadn't used in years. Here's a comparison shot:

Removing the sticker from the tape measure was probably the most difficult part. A good amount of lighter fluid helped. I then used a large end mill to slowly make the two large holes for the bezels which were also used on the Han in Carbonite prop.

I machined down the bezels so that they were level with the half part of the tape measure and cleaned up the machined part (switch). To prevent RTV from getting inside the tape measure, I covered the tape slot with a thin piece of plastic:

After a little painting and sanding, I glued both main parts together with contact cement:

After machining a couple of knurled knobs they were cleaned up with denatured alcohol and glued to the "switch" part. I used the museum photo as a reference to place the knobs based on the red outline left on the original prop.

Here's the finished, resin casting:

Here is the only reference photo I've found that shows either one or several rectangular, square or bracket parts that placed on top of the "switch" hole:

Unfortunately, the photo has a very low resolution so it's difficult to tell exactly what was added and all the reference photos or stills taken after that early shot (Leia on Hoth in the command center) clearly show a hole in the "switch" part. So if there was something originally there, it fell off early during the filming.
The "radio" or "conical" knobs appear to have fallen off the prop just after filming wrapped because the People magazine photo shoot shows the prop without these knobs and of course this is how the prop remained during the museum tours.
While studying the early still, I did notice a couple of holes in what looked like a rectangular piece and came up with an idea. Since several the props used in ESB were dressed up with V8 motor engine parts, maybe the original part was a motor/coil:

, but it doesn't show the raised holes in the motor/coil so it's possible that they flipped it over to seeing the text:

Was this what the original prop was supposed to look like? Personally I don't like it with the motor/coil part, but who knows.
To add more to the mystery of the missing parts, I came across something in one of the museum photos.
It's fairly clear in the photo below that this is residual glue left from something. Was it a mistake that was removed or was there something here at one point that fell off? Was it another knurled piece?

Also, notice the two red marks on either side of the hole. It's possible this is where the rectangular piece was glued. Either that or this is just wear and tear.

Nice one, Vince! You've inspired me to resume working on my own one. (y)

I've got all real parts apart from the bevels and square thingie. Just lacking in motivation these days.

So awesome. There is really great research and insight on the props of SW here. Kudos on the prop.. it is looking super awesome.

I dont have the version used for the communicator so I dont know if they will better match and I cant do a mockup, but instead of the motor coil detail it looks to me like they took the metal arms off the switch and glued them similar to my picture.

I do, and I have the pins still. I can snap a pic when I get home later... its a good theory, i can see the things coming up and out of the hole

It's definitely possible. If you look at the first photo I posted of the original prop, you can clearly see holes near the ends of the brackets and a line between them.
And if all they did was use some contact cement to keep them in place, that would explain why they simply fell off early on. Kudos! :)

Sorry for the super lazy picture of my computer screen.
This is the photoshoot with the main cast all together. You can see virtually all the bits have come off, plus oddly the red mark does not seem to match how it appears today. Two different jackets?

Also Rebels dig tape measures. Here's some on the Echo Base chairs. (Again sorry for the laziness)

Marcus beat me to it, thank you!

Are all those knurled knobs michell parts?

Also, I must have missed it, the big main discs on the tape measure... have those been IDed?
