I figured this would probably go into the prop forum best since it's used for this, but I was browsing around the intertubes last night and saw this :

I was checking out a few links in the other forum, and a few various sites that refer to it, and man that is cool! It's basically a laser scanner for 3d objects, but using a regular hand held or level laser and a webcam. Considering the normal scanners start out around 3k, this would be an awesome DIY project for the techies on the board.

I don't know exactly what I would use it for, but man I kinda wanna make one now.

Just thought I would share :)

wow, that's pretty cool. I wonder if you could scan high end action figure helmets and have it cnc'd on a larger scale?

I really want to try it out !
could scan my 3PO and enlarge it a few percent to get to my size :)

.

Those homemade scanners are cool but the quality is so low that you'd want to use the data as a rough template for a complete rebuild in 3D.

I watched the video ( I subscribe to the podcast and see it very week) and it was pretty cool. According to the info given, if calibrated properly, even this DIY version is capable of scanning the intricate details on a coin!
I just wish they g=had a version that worked on the Mac with having to resort to running a windows emulator. :(
