HMS Built-up Rodd. TOS Phaser, Anyone Have One?

I been looking at the HMS built-up Roddenberry.com TOS Phaser for a while now and was wondering if anyone here has one?

At $650 it's not cheap but still cheaper than trying to pick up an MR one but how's the quality of the finish, how's the features, the light and sound? I know it doesn’t do everything that MR one does but is it a good alternative?

If anyone has one and can post a little review or pics it would be appreciated!

Silly question but is it metal like the MR phaser? I'm just sayin', at the price I'd like to think so.

I'll say it's resin with metal parts.

I just watched 3 MR Phasers go for $1,500 + each on ebay so no matter how bad I want one an MR is off the table.

At these prices, I'm going to have to really think about selling both of my SE's, which have only been out of the box to check them out the day I got them from MR.

I don't have a built up Rodd.com, but I do have this HMS/Starland, which predates Rodd.com.

It's substantially the same... very similar to the prop made for DS9 "Trians and Tritbbleations".

:eek WOW! :eek

I thought you got on the bandwagon with the MR releases.

I did but early last year things got a bit tight with some medical bills and I let mine go. :cry

Missed it ever since but just can't think about paying the prices these things are going for now.

Hey Phase, thanks! That helps, finish looks good.

I have one of the Rod.Com LE's from a while back. The new one's must be pretty close to this. The electronics on this one are almost exactly like the MR electronics. The finish is also great on it. The handle is metal (or something) and the piece has some nice heft to it. They do not have a rising site or removable handle though. I think it is a very nice Phaser and a reasonable alternative to the MR.

Let me know if you want any specific photos of it.

No just resin cast, it is basically a (well) built up rod.com kit.

I have the exact same thing and always thought it was a very nice Phaser. It has a lot of weight to it with a lot of metal parts.

The original TOS phaser is possibly my favorite Science Fiction weapon, and I've worked for years on making a "perfect" phaser. I have a Rod kit, but haven't built it yet, and I'm about to buy one of the fiberglass Hero phaser 1 kits (which I know is a royal pain to build, but i want one.) and the question I keep asking myself is... do I want an exact copy of the original hero prop, or do I want an idealized, perfect quality phaser? Because, as is so very often the case, the actual hero prop was really kind of crappy looking, even when new! Even the hero prop of Phaser 1 was really only a hero from one side - the other side was a strip of velcro with a silver line painted on!

I'm not saying they were bad props, but when building props for TV especially, you are usually working on a "We need it yesterday" timeframe, and one needs to take a lot of shortcuts to get it done on time. (On "Firefly", the "hero" version of Mal's pistol was constantly falling apart, due to the high-speed build!)

What I've usually done is gone for the idealized route - a durn' pretty phaser that looks good from all angles. Does that mean I'd turn down a real, original, screen used hero phaser if it were offered to me? Well, if I could afford it, you better believe I'd take it! I'd come up with the money, somehow! (who needs food, anyway?)

the other side was a strip of velcro with a silver line painted on!

This is not true for any of the p1 phasers except the one in GJein's collection
