Helmets: Prop or costume?

I was just thinking about posting a different thread, but was stopped by the confusion of whether to post in "costumes" or "props".

What do you guys think? Is a helmet a prop or a costume piece? Would there be a reason to think there's be a mutually exclusive definition?

Prop, or costume?

Well, If it's worn, it's a costume. If it's not worn, it's just a prop.

Now, certain props, are potential costumes.

Take for instance, Bondage gear. I wouldn't ever wear it, but would have it laying around just to scare people. In other words, use it as a prop.

If you're wearing let's say, a Boba Fett Helmet while doing some kind of "Role Playing", then it's definitely a costume.

Until you take it off, then it's just a prop again.

My wife says Helmets are costumes, as they are worn, but that's only because... Wait.... Never mind.

Prop

Only a costume if the topic is the whole costume, then it is just one point in a large costume discussion. If the Helmet is the single point of discussion then it is a prop.:)

Okay, so just to be silly, what if your costume was "Darth Vader naked"? You'd have to wear the helmet to call yourself Darth Vader and not Anikin Skywalker.. but that would be the extent of your costume.

Okay... I'm done now. LOL!!

Can you believe the girlfriend and I have had MANY discussions on this very subject. I say prop unless you have the hole get-up. She says costume because you can wear it.
Sometimes I think I need a new girlfriend then I remind myself, where else will I find another girl who will actually heatedly argue this point with me? :lol:lol:lol

like others have said, i think of it as being a prop if it's just the helmet, and a costume if you have the whole thing.

Any girl that will have that argument with you is worth holding onto :thumbsup

Licensed studio scale = Prop (albiet, "replica")

Fan-made = Costume

If Carrot Top uses it on stage = They're all "props."

:)

How does a license change it from prop to costume? :confused
So...if I made a helmet myself as a fan it is a "costume" but then if the license holder hires me to mass produce them does that change my already produced item to a "prop".

If carrot top uses them they become sad:eek

I tend to think of a costume as fabric/cloth. A helmet is something that's been sculpted/molded/casted (and most likely lots and lots of work with stinky body fillers/paint etc.) I think even when it's being worn, it's still a prop in my mind. I feel that if something is sewn or stitched....that's the costume. A helmet is simply an accessory with the costume...so I consider it still to be a prop. :)

I think of helmets as props, or at least, I'd lump them in as part of my 'prop collection'. I don't have a prop collection and a severely incomplete costume collection.

Similar to lightsabers, only further inside the grey area. They can be part of a costume, but they're also recognisable enough to be standalone props.

Yes, but what about Stormtrooper armor? Are the arm guards props or part of a costume? Leg guards? Groin plate?

Are they all props until you put them on over the undersuit which is stitched and made of fabric?

You can see my conundrum.

Batman Cowl... With or without a cape? If it's just the cowl, then it's an advertisement that says "I need a lot of medication for what's wrong with me."

If it's just the cowl, and the person in question is naked, then it becomes fetish wear, which is technically a costume.

There are plenty of websites dedicated to Batman porn. Unfortunately...
