Harry Potter: Snape Build (HBP)

From the stories I've heard, the Snape outfits on tour are the double's. Alan Rickman kept his outfit. But...that may only be true for one of the movies and not all...regardless, those are some great pictures. I've never been completely satisfied with my build and one day want to revisit it. But I think the pattern I used is a good starting point for those of us who can't create something from scratch but rather modify.
I also want to create a Voldemort outfit someday because I love it and he's also my favorite villian because he is just pure evil
And thanks Kessa for your input, color is one of those funny arguements that will always be around for costumers. The question one has to answer for themselves is, do you want to make a costume as close to what appears on screen, or what the actor is actually wearing.

I am wanting to buy the full costume from them just simply because I cant make it myself. What sort of changes will be made do you think?

It's hard to say, as on their site they say they are exacty the same as the originals, but if they were, then they'd all be springing up on ebay as the originals! (that's happened in the past and still happens so they deliberately loose some of the little "tells")

At a guess (and this is just me guessing), I'd say it would be things like the fabric used. Obviously they need to keep these things cheap (or at least, cheap enough to tell to sell on mass) so I'm guessing this would be different.

Also, I noticed that the robes (especially for Griffindor) seemed to be different (the actual robes are more Maroon that shown on the site, but then that could just be a difference in the photograph).

On the whole though, at a quick glance they do look good. My main point was just keep in mind they're not 100% accurate so dont necessarily use them as a source of reference. (hope that makes sense)

As for Voldy's robes..... well, sadly they're just shocking :eek It looks like some green paint fell over in the garage. It's a real shame as they could have been so much better.

No probs, and I completely agree :) .
I had the exact same dilemma when doing my Voldy robes. Did I do them black as that's what people expect them to be, or do them green and know they're accurate but risk having people saying "Oh, shame they're not black" :rolleyes:lol

As you say, the ultimate call is one for the individual. I just thought I'd help clear up the confusion about what colour they actually were, and then everyone knows for sure when it comes to choosing which route they want to take :)

Here is that Museum Replicas Snape outfit for around 400 bucks (with no shoes)...are a few shots of it:

It actually looks pretty decent, color-wise...here are my few complaints:

Coat material looks 'off'
Upper sleeves look too sloppy
Coat pockets and flaps too bulky
Robe material too thin

And, for that much money, I think I'll make my own; plus, it's more fun! :cool

As far as the discussion on color goes, I'm a firm believer that Snape's robes were both black and blue, at different points of the production: 2 shades of black materials for the first (and possibly second) films.....

....and then reworked with dark navy blue fabrics for the following movies, as Rickman had gained some weight (and age) during the duration of filming....

I know lighting plays a big role, and I'm no expert in that field (case in point is the close-up, first photo above, with the brown background: the coat looks almost black, but appears blue in the body shots of the same session)....but it is logical to surmise he didn't wear the same costume through all 6 films; maybe the same pattern, but not the same colors and weaves of materials.

It's funny, the things you learn while researching something totally different than Harry Potter....I was surfing some western wear sites, gleaning info for an Old West reenacting persona I'm working on, and I ran across an item of clothing that I had never considered looking into, when I began researching my Snape costume...the American Civil War chaplain's frock coat. Look at this:

Now, don't these look a lot like Snape's coat? This company actually makes them to order, so I'm thinking it wouldn't be too much to ask if they make them "custom", with the 'Snape' details we all love....

Cool, huh?

Here's another one....

I'm telling ya, even though I like the process of creating my own, it wouldn't take much for me to go this route, as the trials and tribulations of pattern-modding, fitting and construction could be bypassed....I'm sure I would have to do a small amount of custom tailoring, but the bulk of the construction would be done....it sure gets me to thinking! :cool

i do not get why they put black make up in the later harry potter movies like in the deathly hallows it is very strange. and great costume..

Snape was wearing... black makeup in DH?! Whaaa? :eek

Anyway... I'm kinda tempted to scrambled this costume together in time for D*con, but I think I might have to be insane to attempt that, considering it's less than a month away.

I really, really want to wear this costume though.

FML. :sleep

I thought I might be as so bold to mention that Rickman is in his mid-late 60s now, he was in his 60s when movies like The Half Blood Prince was being shot. For him to look like he does is actually quite an accomplishment for his age, including being able to act as though he were 40.

It has been, however, quite entertaining reading the various discussions of his costume. Personally? I just like robes billowing behind me.

Good point....and I agree on all counts! :thumbsup

In this tutorial they also use black but with the blue undertone it's bettter than a dark blue. (hope the link works)

After I've listened to some interviews with the producers and actors, I believe there's only one suit used.

Alan said it himself in THIS interview...
Listen very well when he asked about the robes.

Thank you! just so I have *something* to contribute here is a bunch of close ups of his collar. A lot of costumers I see out there, button it up all the way or it just looks different unbuttoned than in the movie. and do not include the black material under the jacket but over the white.
