Harry Potter costuming sites?

Hello.

I think I will be doing Professor Snape for Halloween. I am told by my wife that it's a good match for my sour countenance! :lol

Having trouble sourcing info on the costume. Anyone know of any HP-specific costuming sites/forums that are worth checking out?

Many thanks!

Rick

A lot of the costume sites (that you can buy from) usually deal with doing student costumes from the 4 houses, and not much else. I think if you want to do a professor, there may be a bit more legwork involved in researching and creating the costume.

I will make this costume. I have done a lot of Googley research on Snape already, but that only gets you so far (blurry screen grabs, links to X-rated fan fiction!). I need info from other costumers.

So any site that goes into detail about the costumes (like an RPF for Harry Potter!) would be what I'm looking for.

Suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

Rick

Yes, I did, thanks. That was interesting, but not the sort of information source about the original costume that I am looking for.

Thanks.

MadamMalkins on the yahoo groups may help. People have done Snape and I recall posts there helping others on it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know when the last time you visited that group was, but it was just spam posts. No real content. Unless you consider viagra and porn site links content!

Still hoping for guidance! Many thanks, folks!

I had been quiet because as noted above you already looked through my thread and didn't find what you were looking for. When I started doing my research for Snape, I found almost nothing. I couldn't find any costuming sites about Harry Potter, the only thing I could find were places that sold Halloween costumes basically, some are a bit better in quality...
Anyway, unless you own the movies, you're really limited on resources. Even if you own the movies most of the shots that have Snape in them are really dark. But the Half-blood Prince has a lot of shots of him and I noted in my thread how to modify the patterns to make it screen accurate. That's all I got though, good luck in your search.

Thanks for your post, PadawanLearner.

Yes, I had seen your thread, and it DID contain useful info. I just figured there might be something more to discover, some more people with knowledge they were willing to share here. I'm surprised there wasn't more response - perhaps HP is considered too mainstream or too kid-oriented to get more interest here (although I see lots of HP prop threads :unsure ).

So I will soldier on as best I can.

BTW, I think, despite every single fan-made costume I've ever seen being black, it is obvious that Snape's suit is actually midnight blue, and only his academic robe is really black. This is a detail I intend to replicate accurately.

cool, I'm color dumb so I never would have known it was anything other than black :lol
I too was pretty shocked at how little information there is out there. I did find one website that claimed to be the main site for Snape, but it turned out to just be some guy's personal website to feed his obsession with the character and nothing really useful at all.
If you're near Chicago, I hear some of the costumes are on display there until, I think September. Some of my friends keep saying we're going to go there...I'll believe that when I see it, though if I do and they allow camera's, I will document all that I can.

I have some photos I got from a site ages ago.
Someone made a nicely bang on version of the costume.
Only way i knew it was pretty much there was because i saw the original.
I was at Leavensden for a few weeks, and I was taken to the costume department on my tour, I loved Snapes costume, so i can help with most things, it was a quick glimpse but i know most of it.
Ill post the pics up in the next few days of this costumers work, I would like to credit them but i cant remember who they were, I just saved the images for my use as i was going to make the costume.

Hope this will be of help.
J

That would be great, thanks! Anything would be appreciated. If you don't want to post them here, PM me and I can send you my email address.

Yes, I've seen this. It is nice work. Also very expensive, but of course anything custom is.

Still looking for good reference material of the real thing.

Rick,
Kindred spirit here, brother. I'm in the same boat; I'm building a Snape costume for Halloween and next year's Deathly Hallows premiere. After hours and hours of web crawling, I haven't found much to help, either. I am now building a "Snape reference archive" of hi-rez photos, internet references, a collection of DVD screensnaps of each movie, base patterns for the robes, jacket, pants, shirt, etc., to help in my construction. I, too, have seen Yvette's site, and Lisa's (severelyrightbrained), MadameMalkin's (spammed) site, and the Twin Roses site…most of the fansites I have found are useless for research purposes. I check in here on the RPF occasionally, but don’t post much (I usually lurk and learn); I’m glad I decided to drop in! When you can, check LiveJournal for Snape costumers, and Cosplay.com has quite a few, also.

As for patterns, I’ve decided to use McCall’s Civil War men’s jacket A (M4745) instead of the Butterick cassock; it has the waist seam that Snape’s jacket has, and is fitted similar. I plan on making the collar higher and flare it, adding the appropriate flat, fabric-covered buttons, narrow, flare and button the sleeves, lengthen and spit the tails/skirt, and add the patch pocket flaps. I’ll be using a deep dark blue wool suiting, as his academic robes appear to be black, and the wool jacket is a really dark blue. The robes are an animal unto themselves; I’m culling through my ancient SCA archive for something I can modify. I haven’t found a good pants pattern yet; I am looking for a vintage high-waist, flat-front style, that I can flare the cuffs and add the buttons to. The white shirt will be a Victorian with stand collar, with a simple black silk scarf/cravat. The boots….it’s been a challenge so far to find a flat, pointed toe men’s style…I’m still on the prowl, but may use a modified cowboy boot.

I’m trying to drop a few pounds before I finish the coat (the pattern runs tight at the top fit), but I’m not too concerned if I don't, as Snape has a slight paunch himself….I’m 6 foot tall, so it should balance out. I’m debating on whether to use a larger nose appliance…mine’s pretty big as is, but shaped more like Dumbledore’s! :)

Anyway, if you need something, let me know or drop me an email…I’ll be monitoring the RPF for replies and updates.

Rob
