Han Solo ANH Hero Blaster Flash Hider *FOUND*

This one is a barrel from a tank....so now we have troop, tank, and plane

I read on one website that the MG81 was very similar to the MG34 just smaller.
It does seem to be a likely candidate.
Since it's a common plane mounted weapon it also matches what Jason Joiner has said (info from Bapty).

Drew - I found that photo pretty convincing too. I saw another photo of an MG81 without the cone but the end piece was still knurled and had the scalloped edge. There might be a version inbetween the two that matches the Han suppressor.

Gabe - No worries. Maybe I just had a thin skin yesterday.
I find it very odd (if this machine gun angle pans out) that Jeff gave the story he did to the board.
Was he trying to throw the RPF off the real trail?

Coincidentally, there was a special on the History Channel today about the German guns of WWII. I watched it, but they just had the usual MG34's, MG42's, MP44's etc. It was still pretty interesting. At one point they referred to the German guns having a "futuristic" look. I half expected a Star Wars reference after they said that.

Get a load of this....proportions look right...but I cant find any more pics with the same FH. ....aarrghh

Maschinengewehr ZB 26 (Used after the occupation of Czechoslovakia)

This machinegun was pressed into service following the occupation of Czechoslovakia. It fired the standard 7.92 mm round.

I also found some Japanese versions, I presume, that are close....fuzzy pics

Damn Drew, that looks damn close if not it, though the pic makes it very hard to tell.
On another note, this has been one of the most exciting times in my collecting. Thank you all for the input and suggestions. This has truly been a real team effort.

Another ZB26

This thread is like the old days before everything was lisensed....not that great replicas are a bad thing, but it kinda takes the fun out of the hunt. The history/archeology side of me loves the hunt.

I also have a theory.

I dont know enough about these guns, nor do we have great high res photos which is frustrating, but it seems to me that the notched U cut outs could be teeth that fit into something else... and a sleeve slides over the teeth OR the teeth keep the piece from rotating...why, I dont know....but the lack of exposed teeth on some of these otherwise very proportionate flash hiders seems as if they might be under something.

I mentioned this a few posts up, and now I cant find it....but I saw a flash hider witha bull barrel type extension behind it.....man its driving me nuts as I thought I saved the picture.... :cry

First, here is a real big picture of the ZB26. In this picture you can clearly see the U shaped cut outs. Very, very exciting.......

However, this one looks a little different and does not have the U shaped cuts.

I love threads like this. :) Excellent work, guys.

I know nothing about flash suppressors so I'll just toss this out for you guys to chew on:

Could it be a combination of parts? Say, the cone from one suppressor and and the fastener from another?

Patrick

The ZB26 and Japanese Type 99 are pretty far off. The cones are much too large compared to the base. The only thing they've got going for them is holes in the cone.
BTW - The ZB26 flash suppressor was posted by bwingpilot way back on page 3 of this thread.

The MG81 that Darth Lars has been posting looks very promising though.
Here's a couple pics blown up that have me interested:
[attachmentid=4122]

Notice the one without the cone still has the knurling, set screw hole and what looks like a scalloped back edge.
The cone suppressor has the correct proportion to the base and correct number of holes.

Eating crow... Yummy :lol

The MG81 looks like it's a winner. BUT unlike the 34 and 42 it's damn rare. They were developed and only used by the Luftwaffe.

I've looked in every ordnance dealer site I can think of and can't find parts except for a few bolts and small parts.

UK members... RAF Hendon in London has a massive collection of WWII German aircraft on display. Many of the weapons are displayed in cases near the aircraft, they might have one. Could someone go and have a look? The museum is free.

Man, this is a GREAT thread, really brings back the old days around here.

The MG81 really looks like it may be the winner and if they are that rare that could explain why no one has run accross one in the past.

Great work to everyone.

Jim

I agree that the MG81 looks damn close, however; I do not believe we should give up looking just yet. I still think the their is something with the correct U Shaped cut-outs as well out there. It is probably right under our nose too.

Party on Dudes.

The only concern I have about the MG81 in that particular photo is a lack of any obvious detailing that would scream U-shaped cut-outs.

Otherwise, Id agree the rest of the piece looks spot on.

We also need some specs as to the opening diameter of the piece...no?

Every time I visited the POSW page concerning the ANH Han Hero I always thought the photo of the fire extinguisher nozzel looked fake or hand painted.

I'm glad to see more reseach being done, and this is a wonderful thread. Its really what makes the RPF exciting.

Good stuff.

as drew pointed out, it might have been the actual piece, its just its origins were in question. I don't see why anyone would intentionally want to doctor a photo up and send it in.

The photo is real. You can see the original version of it earlier in this thread.
Besides, a member here has actually held the piece in their hands.
The piece exists, it's the story behind it that's in question.
