Looks great. The details are so clean and crisp. Can't wait to see the first pull. :thumbsup
I do use a silver powder in my molds. It is intended to be glued together, but someone could easily make some of the parts work. The magazine well is slightly larger than the magazine, so it can move freely. My plan was to use magnets to hold them in place. But I'll need to do a little R&D before I get that part nailed down. I'm glad to hear that you like this prop so much. It has always been one of my favorites. I will be using the same molds for the ODST variant. The only differences will be the suppressor, and the extended magazine. There's a kind of resin with aluminum dust that works wonders for gun weathering. Matsuo (Matsucorp) uses it to amazing effect. Have you considered using it?
Is the Magnum held together with just friction, or are their going to be screws and springs? I'm especially curious about the magazine. Is it just squeezed into the magazine port?
*gargle* I've been looking for "secret" updates at the other forums where you've posted this build. You have no idea how anxious I am for this gun. I covet it the way most RPF members covet the PKD. The ODST SOCOM variant shall be my holy grail prop.
Just one thing: The ODST variant doesn't have the raised bumps on the handle. HOWEVER, I really like them; they add a lot of character to the gun. So I'm hoping you'll keep them when you make the ODST variant.
Thank you. See below for pictures.Looks great. The details are so clean and crisp. Can't wait to see the first pull. :thumbsup
Thank you. I don't have plans for the slide on my gun to function, but the way I molded it, it can move if someone wanted it to. It sits on top of the gun in a groove. Those molds are looking great, very clean. Do you plan on having the slide function?
Thank you. I like to add as much detail as possible. I have always thought that the more detail a prop has, the better it looks.the attention to detail really set this apart! Love the work!
That's just incredible...
Thank you both. I really appreciate it.Looks great, very crisp and accurate work, good job :thumbsup
Definitely interested.
Matsuo must have mixed the silver powder in with the resin. I've considered doing that, but unless someone plans to deeply scratch a prop, it is a waste of time. I tint my resin so that it comes out grey, and gives almost the same effect, and is less expensive. The magnets are optional. The magazines need to be drilled out for the magnets to be used. I don't have any plans to make the flashlight on the ODST suppressor hollow. It would make the mold more complicated than it needs to be. To add a flashlight, you could drill out the area though. I did miss that one small detail. But I sanded mine down pretty quickly, so it isn't a big deal, and each person can choose whichever way they want theirs to be. The overall grip is big, but pretty comfortable. I rounded the edges more than they should have been, to give it more ergonomics. I will cast the ODST versions without the silver powder, but add more tint to make the castings darker.I think the resin used by Matsuo has the aluminum powder integrated into the liquid mixture. So if you want to scratch the cast deeply, you will always hit the metallic shininess.
If you choose to use rare earth magnets, I hope you make them optional. I want to try to modify it to use something different, and would prefer it if there weren't holes where the magnets were intended to go. But it won't be a big deal either way, since I can fill the holes with epoxy.
Another thing. I was hoping you could make the flashlight on the suppressor hollow or removable for easy customization. When I say "removable", I mean the cylindrical form should slide out of the rectangular enclosure. My hope is to put a pocket-sized Maglite in its place.
There's a prop builder called Belakor who made a really awesome 3D model of the SOCOM. You might consider using it for reference: ODST M6C SOCOM Pistol - a set on Flickr
A minor thing:
It seems like you took one piece of the geometry too literally.

The circled area should be round.
Also, how comfortable does the grip feel toward the top? Tactonyx narrowed that area on his, presumably because it's too uncomfortably wide.
You can see in this photo:

Another thing.
When you cast the ODST SOCOM, will it be in white resin, or something darker like grey or black?
Thanks.Excellent work.
Mine is not smaller. But according to the Halo encyclopedia, it should have been smaller. Scaled down evenly by every dimension. The Halo 3 M6G is an "up sized" version, intended for Spartan use, whereas the ODST pistol is about 15% smaller, and intended for normal people use. When you say you used a smaller scale gun for the suppressor, in what way is it smaller? Every dimension, or just the length of the barrel?
