Halo Universe Flood Spore

Here bae a smaller sculpt I'm working on. I'm going for a slightly cartoonish look to accentuate the sacs and folds around the side. This spore is for a prop piece in a fan film so the exaggerated detail should really pop on screen. Should be interesting to see this critter on a fishing line running after a marine.

Here are couple quick color mock ups to see how it might look with some paint.

Looks awesome! I'd definatly go with a real world look IMO. Would make it more frightening. I like the colors they used for the static mcfarlane chief display where he's holding the shotgun up and there are 3 or so flood spores "jumping" at him

Don't forget the large fang/stinger!!

This fella was modeled after the Halo 1 spore, which might as well be a completely different critter than the Halo 3 one. The guy that commissioned this wants the modeling from "Combat Evolved" with the color scheme from "Finish the Fight"

Ah, ok, well assuming you molded this sucker, you could create a few varients!

The final piece will be in flexfoam. I'm also making one with a dragonskin "sac" so that it can be inflated and explode like it does in the game. POP!

Latex mold and plaster bandage jacket. It took over a week to build up the latex for this mold. It has about 15 layers on, but I'd be happier with another 5 or 10 layers on it.

Plaster jacket done! Less than two hours and 20 bucks for a full mother mold? I'm sold!

First flood from the mold. *Squeezy squeezy* It's cast in FlexFoamX. A little denser than I'd like, but it gets a great skin on it. I'm hoping I can replicate these results in FFV. It expands 4x more so I can save a little $ on materials.

Tomorrow I'll break out the airbrush and see what I can do about painting this mother.

Great pull, did you let the latex dry naturally or heat it. I find it a lot quicker to use a hairdryer when doing multiple layers of latex

Some layers I used the heat gun to semi-cure, but most of the time I'd just paint one on and leave it out on the patio in the sun. If I was on the ball I could get 5-7 layers on a day, but it averaged out to about 3-4.

While waiting for the Apoxie Sculpt to cure on the Mass helmet, the Flood Spore got spikes! I always wondered why a little sac of goo damaged your shields so much when they 'sploded. I really figured I'd be done with this project by now, but I've been forced to make yet another mold of it to do proper latex cast pulls.

Finished up the commission piece and shipped it out today. If I never have to work with flexfoam again, it will be too soon. Seriously. Eff flexfoam. What a nightmare to work with. These critters don't have spikes because the foam bonded into my stone mold, nevermind that I coated the damn thing with mold release.

This project has just been a shining example of murphy's law. Whatever could have gone wrong, did.

Yeah they look great.
Maybe not what you wanted, but they still look really accurate.
So that Flexfoam was hard to work with huh?
How many did you end up making?
Just the 4?

I actually made about 10 of em and these were the four "best" ones. Maybe I'm just missing something, but even with proper backpressure these casts come out horribly pock marked with airbubbles and even missing bits. (see lower left flood. what happened to his head tentacle?)

Then I found out that if you use mold release with flex foam, the foam will skin then melt away from the mold wall leaving you with a lumpy puddle of a cast. But if you don't use release, the foam sticks to the mold and you end up tearing it when comes out. Just a nightmare all around.

As for a run, I may find time to pull a couple before dragoncon and pass em out there, but for the time being I'll say what I did when playing Halo - Eff the flood.
