HALO PISTOL update Sept. 21

Well I'm not terribly pleased.

First let me say that having HALO guns is cool because I'm a huge Halo freak.  They aren't the most comfortable grips for my adverage non-MC hands, but that's no fault of Tyler's.

The M6D is warped.  I can't speak for certain if Tyler's masters were symmetrical (but I'm going to assume they are since they were CAD).  This piece is not symmetrical.  Obviously not symmetrical.  The back of the grip has a patch of bubbles about the size of a nickle cut in half.  Higher up there are some shallow gouges (for lack of a better word).  The back end of the slide has an uneven surface and most of the details there are lost.  Some superficial pinholes all over the piece.  The seam line isn't very pretty at all.  Not a bilateral mould, which I don't get but that's just me.  The seperation between the scope (cylander) and the top of the barrel is washed out and the cleanup of the piece has destroyed most of the sharp lines on the piece.

The first M6C is likewise warped, but in a different direction.  Still asymmetrical.  The back end of the slide is uneven and the backside is noticeably lopsided.  I can't find the seam line, and there are few to no bubbles and pinholes.  The clean up destroyed the sharp lines on this piece.

The second M6C is evidentally straight out of the mould, some putty slapped on the backside of the slide, and given a thin coat of black primer.  Different warp than the first M6C, the sugar cookie texture hasn't been addressed at all.  None of the casting's sharp lines have been destroyed by virtual of the minimal clean-up it received.  This one easily needs the most work.

All three have been given uneven coats of a black primer, which isn't a complaint so much as an observation.  However, these are the worst resin pieces I've ever received, and I got some nasty ones from Dreamland Rob years ago.  If Tyler hadn't already nixed the possibility of refunds I would request one now.  Much as I love the idea of having Halo pistols in my collection I'm just so disheartened by what I received I may never get up the drive to actually go into the clean-up needed for them.

Your mileage may very, but I'm not pleased at all.

Pictures later if anyone wants them after my cam is recharged.

Well
That does not sound good at all, I have a bad feeling that they all may be like that
and I too may not have the drive to clean up and finish them:(

Damn...

I wonder how the ones produced from the replication machine will turn out.

No doubt they will be far better than the cast ones
I wonder who will get those

You never know though with a prototyping machine... it may require as much cleanup as these others.

I received my pistols today

I agree,
I have been making silicone molds and casting for about
25 plus years I still do not know everything but I know enough.

Both pistols have slight warpage, caused by removeing the cast item
from the mold too soon, while the resin was still curing.
it may have felt solid but was still warm and will warp under its own weight.

Below is a link to my pictures. Ckick on the pick once to open it
click on it a second time to make it bigger.

I will add more of a review when I get home from work

Mine came today.  I think they all vary.  Mine are okay.

Define okay. Are they well cast/cleaned up, or is it just not anything that'll bug you?

Good detail. Minor cleanup...a little sanding and maybe a small amount of putty here or there should do the trick. My Battle Rifle is all hand made and doesn't have really super detail, so these are far superior to that.

TK648... Man that is aweful, I think they should check them before they send them off, and if there are faults they shouldn't be sold.

Now that I am home from work, I have some time to put in my two cents

First, Trye did a great job in making the prototype, I have no complaints with his machine or
his work. Trye did mention that this was a learning experience for him and for all of us I would
say. Now in my opinion using the prototype machine to make sure all of the measurements and sizes are correct would be good, But to use those parts for making molds from is not a good idea
because of all the striations that are made from the layers that the machine makes while building the prototype. These should be cleaned up with care so the item is not changed to much before a mold is made. I think that the guns should have been made in a few more parts, this may have helped in clean up and added a bit more realism. Or after the prototype is made and all measurements check out OK, then have parts made from laser cut acrylic and make the molds from those, this would give any weapon more of a machined factory look.
I am not a purist about alot of things just as long as it looks like it should I am happy
But when it comes to weapons real or a non-real life gun made from a video game,
I think that it should be made to look like it was made in a factory. And some thing like this gun
that is in kit form should have very little clean up weather it has only one part or several parts.
Both of the guns I have or the guns any body else gets will have to have all of that black paint removed before cleaning them up filling any voids and re painting. I do not look forward to cleaning off that black paint

Trye did mention in anothe post something about a SMG being next, personely I would like to see a Covenet plasma pistol, or the sniper rifle.

Now I do not know how much experience the person who made the molds and casted
the guns has, but from the look of the two guns I have, I would say he is new to casting.

Well that is all for now, please feel free to add your two cents to mine, sometimes I am not careful with my wording or phraseing and I end up sounding negtive so please remember
that this a discussion not an attempt at bashing any body

Trye I do not remember if I offered this before but, I would be willing to make your molds
for you if your mold person has decided not to do this again. please let me know

i got my two yesterday, my pistols do look pretty str8 to me. there are some details missing (like some of the lettering on the sides and the aisan number 7 thats on the top of the weapon) but still looks good......but do like that primer that they used.

Those details were never present on Tyre's model though. No power symbol on the bottom of the clip for that matter ;)

got mine in today.

ill post up a bigger review later in the week when i have some free time and can catch up on some sleep, and pop pics up.

honestly? not overly thrilled with em. if i would have gotten both for about 60~ bucks, i would have been pleased. 125 for the pair, i expected better castings. i think thats been said by everyone though. these are gonna need some TLC to get fixed up. again, something thats been said by everyone.

but, i got my castings, and thats more than i had a month ago, so i cant bitch too much about em.

i do have one point to wonder about though (and this is NOT a bitch point, just idle curiousity).

is it just me or do they seem a bit "small"? i know i have big hands, but i cant grip the pistol without fingers outside the trigger guards. either pistol actually. if they were upsized about 25% or so, i could fit my hand in there, but its just sorta... squished feeling, even with my pinky hanging out.

maybe i just have giant man hands, dunno.

anywho, they came in, packed pretty well, and its one more project to cross off the list.

Actually, in the games characters always have the pinky outside the trigger guard, so you're just fine there.

I got mine yesterday and I think the comments so far are pretty on target.

Bottom line...

This started as a likely very nice RP object and should have been properly prepared before molding to remove the sugar cubing and then primed.

The molding is clearly not done with any degree of care or experience. Molding and casting guns is not difficult. It just takes a little careful planning and patience with the casting. These are full of bubbles and pits and the resin choice is not the best.

A learning experience all around I guess.

I will likely strip mine down and then try to go at them like it should have been done.

I too have rather large hands and they seem to be the right size based on a real world 45cal
I would have liked to have seen the Halo 1 pistol made closer to the size of a 50 cal desert eagle
IMO :)
