So i've been working on an ODST helmet for the past month or so and I'm to the point where I want to mold it to be able to sell it to some friends. So! Since silicon is so expesive and im ok with having to do some extra sanding or bondoing on the casts is there a less expensive way anyone can think of? This is a pepakura helmet btw and I was considering a plaster mold but im worried it may adhere to the helmets surface and ruin everything. Cheers~:)

Take your time on the master. I know its hard to be patient but you dont want to mold an incomplete project. There is no reason to make a throwaway mold on something that is machineable. Get that master 100% then invest into some rubber. Its going to cost you around $400-500 for everything you need to start getting castings out. If you aren't basically giving these away then you should be able to make your money back in 2-3 castings. you can always have your friends give you a deposit to offset the cost as well. But you dont want to use a hard mold on a hard object. You'll never get the casts out. You can go the liquid latex route as well, super cheap but alot more labor intense and not nearly as reliable. Hope that helps.

Liquid latex mold... I assume that's just using 20 or so layer of latex in place of the silicon?

Yes, silicone is $100/gallon, and worth every penny.

I must agree with what was said above, get the Master to 100% first. There is no sense in reproducing an incomplete product. It only multiplies the amount of work to be done with each cast.

Since you are on post #2, I assume that you may be new to the whole process of bulding, molding, and casting. (if not, I opologize) Feel free to post a few photos and progress. Some members here can help with any issuse you may be facing.

Good luck
