Halo 3 Master Chief WIP UPDATE: 20APRIL2011 Helmet is 99.9% Done

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:7/25

Got a really beat up package. I see the mail gods showed it no mercy, but failed lol

Going to be doing some minor mods, I'm going for the H3 trailer style. Fits me perfectly!
Already planning on using the HCH Kevlar padding system since they sell them by the dozen here..

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:8/3

Got some trimming done...along with some plastic dust in my pizza lol

It slips on comfortably now. I just need to get the padding in there so I can start adjusting and playing around with it as well as get some sanding files to clean up the corners and such. Really need my mouse sander though. I'm gonna be lining up the bottom of my chin close to the "nose" portion of the helmet. This will help add height as well.

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:8/3

Looking good so far. Make sure you post some pics of your padding once you've installed it.

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:8/3

Yea, the HCH padding will work pretty well for this. Went by to get some at the small shop across the street but they didn't have them or just not in stock. I have one complete set already, but I really need the sticky backs, plus I'm gonna be getting another set of pads.

I plan to line the inside edge of the helmet with the rectangular ones, maybe even get TK style trimming for the inside edge of the helmet as well. We'll see

Hey Chris, I just had to ask...since I seen you chop up the shins and thighs...how tall are you buddy?? Those pieces are looking great so far...can't wait to see more progress!

I am at or just above 6'6" at the moment. I am about 294lbs but working on cutting as well

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:8/3

for the AR, the front wall where the barrel and light screw in needs to be thicker. I'd suggest pouring some plastic in there, taping up the holes, and letting it cure. When it's thicker, the new holes can be drilled in, and the barrel and light will stay properly.

That's what I do now anyways.

Yea, that'd be something I'd like to do and probably should do. I was actually considering for awhile to cut that whole section off to build it into an actual "shroud" and replace the inner wall with something sturdier.

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:8/3

I drilled a hole in the end of the rifle, inserted the barrel, glued it in with CA adhesive to hold it steady, then cut the hole for the flashlight, mixed a bit of casting resin, poured it into the flashlight hole, and propped the rifle up so that the resin would pool at the point and cure around the barrel. This way the only way the barrel will get knocked out of alignment will be to break off the forward four inches of the rifle body.

You could probably get the same results with one of thos 5-minute epoxy kits you find at the hardware store.

For the barrel itself I couldn't find anything that looked like it would fit a 7.62mm round inside and still be big enough to look right on the outside. In the end I got a piece of 1/4-inch galvanized pipe and a piece of grey plastic pipe that it could just barely fit into. I epoxied the galvanized pipe inside the plastic pipe and when the epoxy set up I chucked the whole thing into the lathe to sand the end and get machining lines into the finished exterior surface of the barrel.

I PM'ed you this idea, but figured I'd post it here in case anyone else would find it helpful.

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:8/3

Got my sander in yesterday (fortunatly!) and picked up a needle filing set. Got to work cleaning up the small corners and such, and got rid of a few bubbles lingering around the casting. Along with that, cleaned up the seam line so now it's not noticable anymore. There's still alot more clean up to do, and some mods I'm still debating on whether or not to do. I got a coat of primer on it as well to see exactly what I need to fix.

Gonna need quite a bit of Green to White technology lol

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:8/7

So I've come to a decision. I'm gonna send my armor back home, but I'm gonna work on finishing up the helmet. It's not that I don't want to work on it here (alot of people want to see it finished lol) but it's going to be alot more work than I can handle considering my budget

I am however going to be doing another costume project for halloween...

Say it ain't so. :(

I was really enjoying watching your progress. It's nice to see progress shots of one of my kits. At the rate you're going, you'd still have finished your suit before I'd finished one of mine.

Trust me, I'd kill to be able to get it wearable here, but the most I could do is just sand pieces and probably paint them over along period of time. The thighs are gonna need fiberglass to extend the ring. (I'm still trying to lose weight at the same time) Another thing is getting the proper adhesives and clamps. I hardly have access off post and won't be able to go to a home depot for quite awhile. The last thing is cost, I still have some debts to pay off and I still need to save something before I leave.

IDK, Just alot of factors I should have considered. I'll be back on this for sure when I get back around thanksgiving/early december.

I'm still gonna build the helmet here! :)

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:8/7 ON HOLD

Did a bit of work the past two days. Mostly just going around the helmet, grinding out bubbles that formed and "straighting" the detail lines. I also added a small detail to both sides of the helmet. This is gonna be based off the H3 Trailer Chief afterall

I'm also going to do another mod I was debating for awhile. This has to do with the vents. It's not that I didn't like the vents already casted on, its just not accurate to the H3 Trailer Chief, to which I already filled one side with 2 part epoxy, which I'm gonna clean up and add the detail lines as needed.

Here's the version Im doing:

Gotta get more epoxy!

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP update:8/9 Helmet WIP

Nothing too big, but I went about smoothing up the filled vent area. I think it's gonna turn out better then expected. It looks alot better then it did earlier, but I'm still gonna need to add some more filler. Put some primer over it, as well as the details I added yesterday to show how it looks.

So yea. I'm out of filler and unfortunatly, they don't sell it on post. I have to wait till whenever I can leave to get some more :(

Other than that, I'm still debating how Im wanting to modify the lower chin detail as well...
