Green Lantern Movie Ring

Oh no- the battery is inserted from the underside of the ring so it pops right out. It will probably cost no more than $15 shipped. That will include the holder, battery and LED board ready to go. You won't have to do any soldering.

Nope- no switch.
You have to remove the battery to turn it off. There isn't room for a switch- believe me I tried!

That sounds reasonable...put me down for two of them!

Glad to see you got it all worked out, Honus! :thumbsup Very nicely done.

(Perhaps an interest thread in the JY should be made so everyone can post there?)

Thanks- glad you like it! I'll start a thread in the JY as soon as I cast the battery holders and get a few ready to sell. I just want to make sure it's perfect.

I almost forgot to show how I modded the ring base (shank.) First thing I did was soak the ring in acetone to help remove the black paint. Then I filed it down a bit with a large flat file and then smoothed it using a sanding stick with a medium grit sandpaper to help get rid of the cast in pattern on the sides of the ring. Note I did not remove all of the pattern- I just took it down some so it wasn't nearly as noticeable.

Next I used a ball burr and started reshaping the dents in the side of the ring and then went over it with a red scotchbrite pad. I then colored the ring with a Sharpie pen and then went over it again with the scotchbrite pad, leaving the recessed areas black. Normally I would use a black oxide treatment but that will eat away the metal they used to cast this ring. It's not perfect but so far it looks a lot better than the factory texture.

And speaking of lanterns, my next trick will be making a new ring that uses an RFID tag and the lantern will house the tag reader so it recognizes the ring and then turns the lantern/power battery on and has pulsing lights and a sound effect- should be pretty neat (provided it actually works.) The trick is that it has to be an all resin ring to make it work as a metal ring would shield the RFID tag. Of course I'll also have to scratchbuild the lantern, which will be a chore...

Your band looks much better that the original Honus.

Looking forward to seeing your new project. As for the ring needing to be all resin, wouldn't a metal-resin hybrid also work with the RFID? Something like the movie ring. I would think that only the part housing the RFID tag would have to be resin.

Since the tag is placed underneath the battery it will sit right against your finger so the entire ring will need to be resin. Hopefully the tag will transmit through the battery and LED pcb- as soon as I have time to write some code I'll be doing some testing. I still have several other projects in the works so it'll probably be a while before I get started on it.

The tags that small? You have pic of it next to a dime or something?

Just thought i'd share my latest ring in this thread :) I'm really happy with how this has turned out.

It features:
Pitted stainless steel band with black oxide weathering
Vibrant green resin gem and face with faux crystalline structure
Stainless ring around the gem

Not the greatest pictures, but these are taken during the day with the sunlight coming through my window

It's pretty small- 16mm OD x 1.85mm height. There are tags available that are even smaller but they are either more fragile or they can't be read from any kind of distance.
