Green lantern getting Horrible reviews!

bashing a movie nowadays is just the trend... people hate because they can. period.

For this film however the hate far outweighs anything else - when you have this many bad reviews and the things drop 22% from Friday to Saturday, there must be some truth there in the negative.

I wonder how many people would be purchasing this film on dvd/ bluray if the fast forward buttons on their remotes weren't working.

The 22% perceived drop was because Thursday midnight shows were counted towards Friday's receipts, though. You take off that 5 mil + from midnight and Friday-Saturday is about even.

I dunno; is that usual to count midnight screenings with next-day totals?

Learn WHO Hollywood makes superhero movies for, it may make it less frustrating for you, but I doubt it.

Hey Mic. If I don't like something, I'm going to have an opinion about it. Thing is, I wanted to see Green Lantern so much that I saw it opening day before noon time. It turned out to be very mediocre and overall forgettable.

The only thing that's frustrating is when you come in here and say that I should know better about who these movies are made for. I saw Xmen First Class and found it to be a very smart and entertaining movie with characters that I liked. That's coming from a person who LOATHS every single one of the Xmen movies. You honestly believe that film wasn't made for the same demographic that Green Lantern was made for?

I thought the CGI was mediocre, SW PT level at best. Took away from the story. Weird George Lucasey aliens. Oh snap.

But...

the movie was entertaining and fun, and far less slapstick comedy that I was expecting from the trailers.

Didn't know a thing about GL before seeing this, other than he's green and has a magic ring. I now know that George Lucas has a clone somewhere that makes up weird Jedi names for superheroes, gives them green Jedi powers, and enjoys the same 3 Stooges humor. Entertained and educated by the same film!

If anything, george lucas made up a whole bunch of jedi with weird names and made their powers from their mind instead of the ring....

I took my son to see it yesterday, he's nine, we both thought it was really good, i didn't know anything about it having not read the comics, a good flick i thought.

I enjoyed it as did my wife, who is in no way shape or form as into GL as I am. I am one of the biggest GL kooks around...

Uncritical consumers of pop culture garbage?

Not all "superhero" movies are the same. I can love TDK and think Daredevil is a stinker. I enjoyed XM:FC and couldn't get through Fantastic Four. I can love Spiderman 2 and loathe Spidey 3. Quality is quality and crap is crap, no matter the genre, and uncritically accepting poorly crafted trash just encourages more of it.

Finally got to see this last night with the GF. While it wasn't the greatest movie, it still wasn't bad. Felt too short, especially with the final battle with Paralax.

I'm glad to see Sinestro put on the yellow ring. IDK, I never got into the green lantern comic, except for some of Blackest Night, but it made me happy to see that one scene...

Uncritical consumers of pop culture garbage?

I was with you until you got to "garbage," because we all know that old "one man's trash is another man's treasure" saw, right?

Seriously, not all consumers of pop culture consume with a critical eye. Why bother? It's "pop" culture, after all, not "culture."

It's this sort of vitriol that make citizens think nerds are all mental.

I don't think anybody has a problem with you not liking particular movies, do they? I don't have a problem with it. However, while something might be "garbage" to you, doesn't mean it is to me...

This is also where respecting other's opinions comes into play rather than making comments such as "accepting poorly crafted trash just encourages more of it" which implies what I like is trash. However, if I like it then I hardly consider it "trash" even if I sometimes say self-derogatory things like "if I didn't like it, you know it was bad."

I happen to like a lot of things other people think were bad. I happened to like Daredevil, the 2004 Punisher movie... heck, I'm going to buy the 1990 Captain America movie when it comes out on BluRay next month. I wouldn't spend money on it if I thought it was trash.

There are other movies I didn't like that I'd rather not see again... The Green Hornet, Elektra, Catwoman, Blade 3, X-Men 3 and list goes on. But I don't think liking particular movies encourages the making of more trash and just because I didn't like some movies doesn't mean I want them to stop making superhero movies... that's simply throwing the baby out with the bathwater in my opinion.

Furthermore, as I posted in a previous thread, superhero movies are still a rare genre. Despite what people keep saying, there are anywhere from 3-6 per year out of some 250-350 movies that are ranked annually. So, yeah, I'd like to encourage more. The only movies I'll see in the theater this year will likely wind up being limited to Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America, X-Men First Class plus Harry Potter and Bridesmaids at my wife's request.

I bought GI Joe on blu-ray. I think I am one of three people that liked that movie. lol

It's not vitriol, and I'm not being a nerd, I'm being a film critic. I think pop culture has a lot to offer. More than alleged "high art" in many cases. But shallow movie making is shallow movie making. You can have good pop culture that doesn't leave you feeling guilty in the morning.

And yes, you are right about that old saw. I like AVP:R, after all, so that proves it :lol I withdraw my comments!

Just finished reading it, but if you haven't read the trade for Green Lantern: Rebirth, I highly recommend it...its a great read, and I think it explains alot of why they went the direction they did w/ the story in the movie and a little bit of foreshadowing on how things might play out.
