Graflex Luke ANH Build, Done ( yes, another one of those :))

Re: WOOHOO! my first Graflex!!

I already got a nice D-ring+Clip from Roy ( Thanks for the lightning fast delivery :)) that i bought mainly as reference material and in case i didn't find a D-ring myself :)

Because i think it is part of the thrill to find a D-ring myself that is up to the Sym-Cha specs :D

So i will order said ring from my earlier post to compare them to the Sym-Cha standard and see if i got a winner :D and if not then the search continues.

Until i can't contain myself to finish the saber en then Roy's D-ring gets on there :lol

Re: WOOHOO! my first Graflex!!

You should also consider his t-track. It's as good as Ginos, for a much more reasonable price.

Re: WOOHOO! my first Graflex!!

Speaking of t-track -- does Saberfreak still sell it? I messaged him last week and have heard nothing back.

Re: WOOHOO! my first Graflex!!

Did you send him a PM or an email? ... It's possible his inbox is full so try an email instead. Otherwise Roy's T-track is a really good alternative :)

Re: My first Graflex!! ANH Build (Work in progress)

A little update since my Graflex has arrived :)

Graflex was in better shape then the Bay pictures led me to believe, so really happy with it.
Need to do some serious cleaning because of dust, but loving the scratches on it :D

EDIT
Ohw and the D-Ring i ordered from my earlier post has the exact same dimensions as the one from Roy so happy with that to,
no need to look further now :)

Re: My first Graflex!! ANH Build (Work in progress)

Looking good!

Something for you to consider, instead of drilling a hole to pop rivet the D ring, I myself have pop rivetted the clasp, filed the protusion off back flat, and then used Kwikgrip/Barge cement to glue it. This glued so well no matter how hard I pull on it it won't come off. I did this with my ESB Kobold, so with ANH style clasp there is even more surface area. In this way if you ever wanted to de-comission and return the Graflex back to original condition all you need do is soak the 3 cell bottom in acetone to soften the glue. I even used the same glue for the T tracks, works a charm.

I still not have completed my ANH but have all the bits including the Exactra 20, I am trying to work out the best way, or closest way it may have been done. I don't think it was slid under, but the fastest method was probably to sand the two sides and clamp it between the graflex clamp's edges. I have a theory that the edges may have been carved into a wedge and partly went under the two clamp edges but then stopped and hence why the lever is not fully shut, but I am leaning more towards the two longest edges sanded back and just not enough for the clamp to shut completely.

Happy Saber building!

Also keep an eye out on Romans props, he is doing a GRAFLEX run but it may be shut, but he may in the future be selling GRAFLEX replicas.

Read your thread about the topic and i also think that is was to much work for the prop maker to sand the bubble down to the right fit as is mostly done,
liking your idea, could it also be that they pried open the space where the bubble is placed under? making the space bigger to fit the unsanded bubble (can not explain it better because my english aint that great :D)

Re: My first Graflex!! ANH Build (Work in progress)

Also got al the stuff gathered to complete the saber, excellent T-Tracks and D-ring with clip from Roy at Wannawanga, com
Going to use the Clip from Roy's as a template to make my own clip from a different kind of metal, not decided what kind yet :)

And i think i am going to wait if Gino is doing another run of Tracks to compare the two and see which Tracks suits me best, absolutely not saying Roy's arent the right one's because they are great :) just like to have options.

I want the build to be the best it can be in MY mind, hence the use of another kind of metal for my D-ring clip.

Of course any help and insight is GREATLY appreciated :D

Funny you mention prying open the lips on the clamp, I talked with Sym-Cha about this idea, I tried to do this using the camera's mount as this is what it slides into, I opened it up a bit, but to the point of the thickness of the strip to fit is a bit much, and I think it may have been noticble in the toe shot pic. I think this is harder than belt sanding the two ends and sides to fit between the clamp. Also have you seen Sym-Cha's discovery of the two different types of Exactra strip.

Look forward to see you build

Re: My first Graflex!! ANH Build (Work in progress)

I used a metal putty knife to pry the lip area of the clamp open just a bit on one of my Graflex flashes. It worked great and was easy to do ,creating just enough extra space for a circuit board.

http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=38510&highlight=T-track GINO's unlimited run ... send him a PM. Though in my opinion Roy's T-track are just as good ... http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=73545 here's that thread about the 2 variations in bubblestrips ... it's hard to conclude from that one picture with your Exactra 20 . . . but usually a very dark brown display window could imply all round bubbles inside . . . sometimes the series number is also a give-away on what's inside ;)

Yes I have noticed some graflex clamp lips are not all the same and some do need a little prying to slide under the circuit boards or strips. Great tip with the putty knife, back straight edge? I am guessing, makes the most sense to lift the entire area in one hit, also less flex in the putty knife.

Precisely right!

That straight edge applies equal pressure along the length of the lip. I did mine in small incremental lifts until the gap was just right.
