GI Joe costume: toy or "real world?"

Yeah, I think that really worked on your tunnel rat. No offense to the other one, but yours is waaaay cooler. I think with flash the gun, the pack, and ESPECIALLY the red pads would be obvious to any Joe fan, and adding "real world" stuff wouldn't detract.

Would I attach the pad to the harness d-rings, perhaps, or would that look foolish?

I agree with you. Use the recognizable parts and having a mix of real world gear wouldn't detract. You could attach the chest pad to the d rings of the harness. I think it would look good.

That's what i did for my cobra viper. I used a little real military gear and it worked very well.

What about the arm and leg pads? How are you attaching those? I guess they could be sewed directly to the uniform or you could use some od green straps with velcro.

I figure the arm and leg pads could just be velcro'd on. The chest on the figure obviously has a harness, so it's reasonable to assume the arm and leg pads are removable. But there's no straps for them on the figure, and I think it'd look better to keep it that way, so yeah, I'll go velcro if/when I get off the ground with this.

Now if I could find a bandsaw, a vacformer, a sewing machine, and a box of money. :lol Still, I never get past the enthusiasm stage, and dammit, I want a Halloween costume! Since the pack has me frustrated, I'm gonna see if I can't get a fix on the gun design, do some blueprinting/mockups today.

Cool man! I would love to see any progress you make on the laser rifle!!:thumbsup
 
Well, I found an ALMOST profile pic of the rifle, blew it up as much as I could manage, and printed it. Using the figure's hands to extrapolate some measurements, I was able to make prints for the main "shrouds" that run from the handle to near the barrel. They actually look like mini/stubby pulse rifle shrouds, so that's cool! :lol

The pic is from the 25th anniv card art, which is different in a few regards from both the 82 and 25th rifle, but you get the idea of the part I mean, the one in red:
 
anything else going on with this? i'd love to see a Flash costume with the J.U.M.P jetpack.

I thought about doing the JUMP pack, because it'd be easier than the laser pack and gun!

(I'd LOVE to have that box, by the way! Joe art is so awesome!)

Basically, after lots and lots of work, I decided that to do this costume right would cost so much money and take so much time that I can't get it done by Halloween. Yes, I could spend a hundred bucks and slap something recognizable together. But I'd rather put that toward something really high quality. Frankly, I think the helmet will have to be a custom job. I just want to do it RIGHT, you know?
 
I costume as a Cobra Blue suit...but have been bitten by the armor bug. Am working up a non-canon, strictly "what if", theoretical, hypothetical flak vest. It based on the two precepts of Cobra.

1. Provide basic protection. ( if the troopies were too well protected, C.C. couldn't shoot them in the back. Can't have that now, can we? haha )
2. Don't be too expensive. ( remembering the original Cobras had the finest twenty year old Soviet knock-off weapons that money could buy )

I think it's well on it's way to looking pretty cool so far. will post pics soon.
 
It's my opinion that the cartoon would fade from memory, but the action figure is a real physical toy that remains... Plus, you can carry the action figure with you. If people don't recognize your costume, you can bust out the toy and then watch their face! :cool

In 2012 I decided to do a Recondo costume, and I did a lot of searching to find if anyone else did one too. This is the only place that I found anyone else doing the costume too, and I have to say great job!

I suppose with trying to copy any action figure, its all in finding real world items to duplicate entirely fictional gear molded onto the figure. I bought a reproduction holder and modified it to fit like Recondo's. I also took my worst M1936 pistol belt, which they're khaki, and I painted it dark brown.
