General Doctor Whoniverse Discussion

I meant Jack from before he became unkillable really, I think he was a more interesting character then, i.e. he was just a human con artist, but from the future

The 9th Doctor and Rose were great. When 10 came along and she fell in love with him, well, it all went down hill after that.

I liked it because it was DIFFERENT. There had never been quite that kind of relationship before. But then they kept making the companions fawn over the Doctor. Ugh. Enough. I want a Teegan, Adric, Leela, Sarah Jane Smith back. Something like the companions of old, who travelled with the Doctor but didn't see him as the greatest thing in the universe.

NOT ADRIC. Gah. Adric was AWFUL mostly because they couldn't figure out how to write him consistently. I agree, though, that the Doctor worship element has grown stale. That was one of the things that was most refreshing about Donna. She cared about him, but there was no undertone of romance or hero worship.

I thought Martha was a nice counterpoint to Rose, and if they'd left it at that and just done other characters, it might've worked. But Amy's relationship was....weird. It seemed to alternate between hero worship and love and then she'd be like "Silly Rory. Of course I love you, you great daft pillock!" And Clara I can't quite get a bead on. I think Clara's character is just thin possibly because of all the "But you're impossible" thing. She's self-confident...ok...and she's pretty and witty...but I haven't gotten much more of a sense of who she is.

I dunno. I think the pre-Moffat companions were basically fine. Rose was great. Martha was ok, and a nice counterpoint to Rose. Donna was awesome. The specials were all over the place. Then Moffat took over and the show got a bit scattered. It's not awful, mind you, but it's not what it could be.

I'm likewise SICK of the companions being "The most improtant human on earth" that the Doctor was destined to meet and would have somehow died for good had they never found each other!

The only issue is that, while the dynamic has the potential to be interesting, a companion hailing from a non-current time period would give viewers no one to relate to- posing the same issue as setting the strory on an alien planet with no human presence.

I also hope that no real issue is made of the Doctor's age, apart from a short conversation directly following regeneration- and WHAT DO YOU MEAN the Doctor doesn't count as a relatable character? !

You do realize that Steven (stephen?), jamie, zoe, leela, adric, ace, mel, and i'm sure more, weren't companions for the current time period. And on top of that, the majority of any classic doctor's adventures didn't occur in current day either.

Dear Lord, it's beautiful.

Agreed. Just regular people. Maybe exceptional in that the Doctor thinks them worthy of traveling with him, but no more Gods (Rose), exist everywhere the Doctor goes and is generally impossible (Clara), the 'most important woman in the universe' which has been used to describe several people (Doctor-Donna), fixed point in time and can never die (Jack), etc.

I'd rather more Tin Dogs like Micky more than anything else.

Just REGULAR people already.

Not necessarily in our time period either, I'd be okay with a past or future companion too.

Not tin dogs, at least not in the sense of being the useless butt of every joke. Regular companions who can hold their own and bring something useful to the Tardis, but who aren't the Lynchpin of the Space-Time Continuum or the Keystone of Eternity or whatever.

I had another idea about the role that John Hurt will/may play.

What if this is actually the culmination of the Cartmel Master Plan?

For those who don't know Andrew Cartmel was the main writer for Doctor Who during the Sylvester McCoy run. He introduced a "master plan" that ran as an undercurrent through McCoy's later tenure on the show, which dealt with the three main figures responsible for creating Gallifreyan society and the establishment of the Time Lords. Those three figures were: Rassilon, Omega, and "The Other." It was long suspected that the Doctor actually was The Other in some sense.

So...what if that's what they're doing with this? What if Hurt's character both ends the Time War, and in some way creates or re-creates Gallifrey and the Time Lord society, causing such a massive disturbance that his actions end up outlawed by the Time Lords in the future? What if this is basically the return (in a sense) of the Time Lords, and just in time for the 50th anniversary of the show? It'd seem somehow fitting to me, were this to happen, AND it'd dodge the whole "Which number Doctor is he?" He isn't. He's The Other.

Bad Wolf, Gallifrey, TARDIS door, Daleks, big boots, good hair...

Thanks for pointing out the 'BAD WOLF'. I hadn't caught that.

I have to say, I was on one of the news sites earlier & saw the BBC's big reveal of all they've planned, & to be quite honest, I'm a little underwhelmed. Most of what I saw seemed to be alot of fluff that could be thrown together at the ;ast minute. I hope I'm wrong, but clip shows & famous fans being interviewed wasn't really what I was hoping for.

That's his 50th Sad Hair. At least John Hurt seems to be pulling off Tennant's series 3 look there.

What is up with 10's hair? seriously it looks terrible and not in-character at all.

It's his hair from Broadchurch. Be glad he at least shaved (he's rather hirsute, actually).

Separate thought:

So, if 11 jumps back into his own timeline and bumps into 10. Presumably, the encounter with 10 happens after 10's time with Donna, and either before or during the Tennant Specials.

So...if the encounter happens at that point, perhaps it is this CLEAR violation of the laws of space and time that prompts 10 to go off the deep end and start breaking the rules as he did towards the end of his run. Like, in addition to the loss of his companions and all the pain around him, maybe this was the thing that told him "You know...you don't HAVE to play by the rules..."
