Game of Thrones

Book 3 mostly with a little bit of book 5 thrown in, really. Theon's storyline in the show technically happened at the time of book 3, but we didn't really find out about it until book 5.

So it wasn't just my DVR? I thought my machine had gone on the blink. I watched the rest with HBO on Demand this morning.

After a few minutes we just changed it over to SD HBO, but wound up missing about 5 minutes.

Been a while since I read the early books, but I'm pretty sure we're into book three territory here.

The plan was a book per season, but with GRRM's writing pace and so they could tell the stories without them feeling so rushed, starting with this season the seasons will be half a book, so season 3 is the first half of book 3, season 4 will be the second half, and so on.

Dumb question, but who were the Nightwatch guys fighting? Were they split and fighting among themselves? It was a little unclear what was going on.

In the books a few of the night's watchmen were planning to desert and kill Mormont long before Craster's Keep. They felt Mormont was taking them out to die facing 20,000 plus wildings, and they weren't to keen on that. The horn blowing warning of the others kind of put it on hold for a bit. Once they got to Craster's Keep, they blamed Craster for letting Bannen starve and they were upset at Craster holding back food during the "farwell feast". So when they upset Craster and killed him all hell broke lose and the deserters took advantage of it and killed Mormont.

The watch is not what it used to be and there are not nearly as many voluntary watchmen compared to criminals/outcasts who took the black because it was that or imprisonment or death. So you don't exactly have a bunch of upright honor bound people necessarily

I nominate Jon Snow as the next commander of the nights watch!! I'll miss Mormont's character though.. he was good :(

I may be forgetting plot points, but I'm still trying to figure out how they're gonna pace this thing out to run in two seasons. There are, if memory serves, four key events in Book 3.

Joffrey's wedding is one of them, but that has to occur after certain other big events, which I think means Season 4 will end with his wedding. That right there makes me wonder how they're gonna slow-pedal that storyline, since it's been humming along pretty steadily for the last 4 episodes.

One of the other events, I think, must also happen in Season 4, and involves Jon. I suppose they'll play out his and Sam's journeys southwards rather slowly this season, and then build towards the big event with Jon during next season. I recall it happening a lot faster in the books, though. Or maybe more that it happened very quickly in a few chapters spread out over the book.

The last one involves Dany and a character who won't be appearing in the show at all (but whom I think will get a stand-in character).

Now, there's plenty of smaller events that, if memory serves, occur in the middle of Book 3. Stuff involving Arya, developments with Tyrion and Littlefinger, etc.

But as I recall, the third book doesn't exactly structure itself neatly into a clear "first half, second half" with HUGE events at the end of each which would be worthy of a season closer. Not exactly, anyway. So, I'm guessing they'll shuffle certain things around from where they appear in the book, much as they've done with Theon's story. Oh, and the IMDB credits confirm who his "rescuer" was this episode. (although when I looked again at where they took him back to, I really should've guessed last episode)

They may expand Theon's story to help fill space during this season, too.

Suffice to say, this is a REALLY difficult job for plotting purposes and for hitting certain beats during the season. Which, I suppose, makes it all the more impressive when they make it flow smoothly.

We'll here's the titles for the episodes left this season

Kissed by Fire
The Climb
The Bear and the Maiden Fair
Second Sons
The Rains of Castamere
Mhysa

For those who have read at least the first 3 books, I'm guessing based on those titles these are the main events left which we'll see this season and what will probably happen next season...
Kissed By fire based on the previews seems like it will have a lot to do with Dondarrion and the Hound's grudge match

Jamie meets Roose at Harrenhal

The Climb is most like Jon and the Wildling's stuff going over the wall.

The Bear and The Maiden fair is Jamie going back to Harrenhal for Brienne.

Second Sons will be Dany's siege on Yunkai

The Rains of Castamere will be the red wedding.

Mysha (mother) in Valyrian will be Dany in Meeren maybe? or more of Yunkai

Prior to the Rains of Castamere episode they still have to fit in Arya going off with the Hound. Robb's beheading of Karstark and the Riverrun stuff. You've got more Bran stuff. Sam has to make his way back to the wall with Gilly. You've got more of the Tyrell stuff in Kings Landing

possibly even Tyrion's wedding

That still leaves plenty for the next season from "second half" of the third book

Joff's wedding. The attack on the wall. Stannis showing up at the wall. The nomination of a new night's watch commander and the Janos Slynt stuff. Prince Oberyn's intro. Tyrion's trial, the showdown between Oberyn and the Mountain, the answer to the question of whether Lord Tywin does in fact ****** gold and Tyrion's flight after doing the deed...

Yeah, that sounds about right, actually.

Also, re: Kissed by the Fire, as I recall that phrase refers to a wildling phrase, so we'll probably get a focus on both what you expect, and on some wildling stuff. Rather than type the spoiler, I'll just leave it at that.

The wildlings say that Ygritte has been "kissed by fire" because of her red hair.
We'll probably see Jon/Ygritte nookie in that episode since shortly after she shared that little tidbit, there was awkward cave sex.

Also, new if Game of Thrones happened on Facebook recap. :)

Ah yes, forget about that phrase. Apparently "I know nothing"

I remember thinking the same things along the lines of the Jamie comment ""why do you even have a canteen of horse p ***?"

I forgot to add that I loved the fact that the kid Tyrion gifted the prostitutes to is now a major rumor/mystery going around and people are trying to find out what he did. :lol

What an awesome ending to an incredible episode. Dany is awesome, and I love the treatment of her character. I got goose bumps when everyone finally realized what she was doing.
