I think Theon's scenes are meant to establish
Ramsey Bolton. His character was supposed to be in Winterfell with Theon under a different guise. Since the Boltons play a big part in this season, the show is making up for lost time by having Ramsey's deceit of Theon play out here instead of in Winterfell.

As I recall, they didn't REALLY go into what happened to Theon (unless it's in book 5 which I haven't read yet).
Oh, and I JUST read on io9 that Strong Belwas won't be appearing in the show, according to George RR Martin. Sad panda.

Ahhhh. Well, once I'm back to work, I'll need to shell out the $14.99 for the ebook (even though I think that's outrageous... particularly since the paperback is less.

I'm sorry Strong Belwas won't be making an appearance, but I'm really upset that Vargo Hoat (and the Bloody Mummers) seem to be written out.

I wouldn't count on people losing interest if it starts to get more fantastical. I know quite alot of people that under any normal circumstances would never watch a show like this but despite alot of the more out there stuff like dragons, warlocks, wargs, and whatnot they love it. My physiotherapist and my trainer both are the most un geeky people ever but they wouldn't shut up about the dragons and they spent a good 15 minutes focussing the wargs with each other while I was working out.

Well, the first season was VERY low magic. The book a little more. In book five, you've got flaming liches and weird races being introduced and it almost gets a little too much. Honestly, I thought the low magic stuff was generally better because once you introduce magic, you can easily get 'a wizard did it' as an explanation of why/how something happened. I liked things being kept more simply with Ned Stark and his honor and the politics of Westeros.

What's all this re: Vargo not being in? Last I heard they were doing some casting for that role, no? I can't imagine they won't have the Bloody Mummers/Brave Companions. I mean, they're rather....integral to the story at certain points.

No, you're correct. The character of Locke, which we just saw as the Bolton man who captured Jamie and Brienne has seemingly replaced Vargo Hoat. At least as far as this season goes, there will be no Vargo Hoat or Bloddy Mummers. I was kinda let down by that, too. Really wanted to hear an actor pull off that lisp! :lol
I also never saw any news of Strong Belwas being cast for this season. Since they abandoned the whole Arstan storyline, seems unlikely they'd bring him in later, but I guess you never know.

The boy and girl who joined them are Jojen and Meera Reed. Their father is one of the Stark Bannermen. They're a bit late showing up compared to in the books (they actually showed up during book 2 when Bran was hearing petitions from his people).
Jojen has what he calls 'green dreams', which are like Bran's where he can see things that are happening far away, etc. He helps Bran learn to control them and interpret them until they can reach the three-eyed crow who'll teach Bran in earnest.
That was Rickon, Bran's younger brother.
